87 300D How do I get the telescoping head rest to go all the way down?
On my 87 300D how do I get the telescoping head rest to go all the way down? I took the two screws out of the seat back to get access but I was scared to pull the panel for fear of marring the upholstry, it still seems glued "in". One of the two steel rod posts has a blunt end, the other has a pointy end.Thats the side that catches, I tried using Vaseline and slamming it down, didnt work. The seat head rest wont fit a 6'0" --its postioned for someone 6'6"

headrest problem
You have to remove the back panel from the seat to diagnose and fix the headrest. Squeeze the seatback springs to loosen the side panels, which are terminating in a groove on the side of the backpanel. They separate pretty easily with some slack in the system. The headrest problem will be obvious once you can visualize how it works. Probably a broken plastic thingey that can be fixed with nylon cable ties.

thanks, mike
I just have one last question. By squeezing the seatback springs do you mean applying pressure as if someone's back were resting on the chair as if he were sitting in it?
Or do you mean pushing forward on the back of the chair from the rear seat... I am really trying to get this car back to good condition, I scrubbed the engine down when I did the timing cover and got every trace of grease off of it |

Yes, you push the seatback cushion toward the frame.
The headrest is electric, switch is the tiny button behind the backrest button on the door. If it doesn't go up and down when you use the switch, the carrier is broken, do a search for repairs, someone posted some nice pics last year. Peter
