Question Intermittent clanging noise a result of bad engine shocks/motor mounts?

Hello to everyone.

My 1983 300TD Wagon has been running great. However, over the past 6-8 weeks, it has developed a strange noise at low idle. At first I thought for sure that it was a loose heat shield some where, but I couldn't find anything. The best I can tell, it seems to be coming from right around the torque convertor, but that is a general estimation. It only makes the clanging noise btwn. 700-900 rpm's. If I'm in park or nuetral and rev it up to 1000 rpm's+, it completely goes away. I don't here it when I'm driving, only when the car comes to a stand still. It has not affected the performance of the vehicle in any way. It's just plain annoying. The other day I read a thread that suggested when motor mounts and shocks get worn out, they can act as a "short" for sound, and amplify what would otherwise be a normal running engine. Does anyone know anything about this? I have suspected that I need to replace my mounts/shocks, because the car vibrates considerably at normal idle (700 rpm's). If I rev the engine, the vibration goes away, as does the sound. So basically I'm looking for a connection btwn. the bad shocks/mounts and the sound. Any input?

If you havent checked the air filter bracket, it might be that. With bad engine mounts, the stress put on the bracket from the shaking and vibrating makes it break, letting the air filter housing rattle free atop the engine. The vibrations smooth out at higher rpms, and the housing stops shaking, then when u return to near idle and at idle, the housing starts rattling again.

Gotta fix mine asap, of course after the engine mounts are replaced!

Good thinking! However, all the air filter brackets are in good shape. Thank you for the reply. Any other ideas?

My 240 has a loose metal piece (heat shield) on top of the drivers side engine mount... it does exactly what you describe... try picking up on it... a little dab of silicone should glue it down if that is it....
