Hey Peter,

Finally, you can say the words "gas mileage" on this forum without being corrected

Not actual gasoline in most of those, either, but hey!

It's generic.

Returning to diesel topic of this board.....

Another thing to consider, something that most engineers cannot comprehend or even begin to explain, is the fact that diesel engines vary considerably based on how they have been driven and broken in.

As former truck driver who has slip-seated in and out of commercial fleets of 7-10 identical diesels identically maintained over periods of about 100 thousand miles each year, I can assure there are some damned slow diesels out there (and some incredibly fast ones) of the same identical year, make and model.

Gotta believe that the soul of the narrow power band diesel engine (self-combusting) becomes accustomed to specific RPM ranges..... thus "grandma's" automatic 240D which never sees anything north of say, 2800 RPM's, becomes a completely different engine from another 240D which has been redline shifted for its entire life; never bottomed out and sustained in higher engine speeds for its entire several hundred thousand mile career.

What the hell is that thing anyway?? It looks like a Texas cowboy installed the largest belt driven supercharger that he could find onto some kinda small block V-6.... then chucked the mess into a Mercedes, as if the original MB engine was the worst part of the car. LOL, maybe some people are more interested in the emblem/marque then they are in the car as a whole.

Texas Cowboy? Give me a break.

If that was a real Texan conversion, it would have been jacked up, had 4WD and a hitch for a gooseneck cattle trailer. More likely done by some backwoods, mooshinin' yokel from Kentucky or Tennessee that needs to outrun revenooers.

It's very true that some diesels are just stronger than others. And they have good and bad days in my experience. I have had good luck turning grandma's 240D as it were into a more lively vehicle. My 300D is a good example.

The 126 is a little extreme, but I think a 123 or 126 with a nice sedate and powerfull EFI domestic engine could be nice. Much like the Jag/LT1 swap.
A TPI 350 makes an older XJ a really great car. Euro gas engines just have not caught my eye somehow.

Funny cars run on nitromethane but, that 126 is no funny car.

Various mixes of alcohol (ethanol/methanol) and nitromethane, I believe.

Top fuel is all nitromethane (or at least mostly nitro), necessary because they spray fuel on top of the supercharger and the "fuel" must ignite in liquid form but not under the supercharger (it blows off, quite dramatic!). The amount of fuel going down those engines is astounding -- engine is about 5:1 compression ratio with a 3:1 or so (may be 8:1) blower on top, it's common for the dry sump oil tank to fill with fuel during a run. Note that the chrome exhaust pipes are never "blue" from heat -- the fuel ignites in the air at idle. If they ran gas, they would belch black smoke at idle!

Most of the rest of the dragsters run on alcohol, I believe, but I don't know anyone in the "business" anymore.

That's an M117, probably (or an M119), look at the valve covers. What kinda horsepower it makes I have no idea. I assume it has a radiator from the cutouts for the aux fans.

Nice installation, but I'm not terrible impressed with drag racing -- if a 20,000 lb Chance-Vought Corsair could accelerate from 0-80 in 600 ft on a true sustained 2100 hp, how much horsepower does it take to drag 1500 lbs to 300 mph? It's all about tires and sticky tracks these days.

Peter

Only about 6000hp, that's all.

Hattie, I think that you will have to give him a little change together with the SDL to allow him to agree to that deal.

But, if you take the SDL out of the deal, he might take a little less.

Maybe when I get out of college and have some money... I like my SDL but sometimes want something that is just extremly fast. I want to buy or build an extremly fast German car one day. Porsche's are starting to attract me, maybe a 911 turbo with some RUF work done to it. Ahh dreams An old F1 car would also be cool.

Although the SDL does move when it wants to.
