Does it bother you?

Does it bother you to see people using red dye diesel in their cars? It's obvious that .97/gal is much more attractive than $2.00/ gal and over. It's also a well known fact that avoiding road use tax can cost the violator plenty of bucks.

I could care less who screws the State and Federal boys out of tax money on diesel fuel. What do you think?

for the life of me i really can't tell who is using what fuel in their cars...
personally i save a lot of $ on fuel by simply shopping around.
veggie oil sounds like a good alternative, until it becomes more popular and the gov't slaps a tax on that too

nope. If I had the space (working slowly at it) to make my own fuel I would. Until then, I won't drive 10miles just to save 20 cents when I can save 50 right here in town.
But us prospective chem engineers just like to tinker :p

Although the chances of getting caught are extremely minor in a diesel car (as opposed to a pickup), the fines from getting caught once would buy a whole lot of taxed diesel.

I have always wondered what exactly the dye was they used and if it was possible to devise a scrubber to remove it from the diesel. Just idle curiosity...

Absolutely not. If I knew how to find it, I'd run it too.

(gives me an idea....)

I think red diesel is used for farm tractors etc.

I would't do it. Pay the tax, it pays for the
roads we drive on.

I would be more worried about being reported by the station attendant than being caught with it......

AT THE RISK of breaking up this chorus of unanimity, I don't think its particularly honorable to take your share of road taxes (which after all, pay for the road construction that is always under funded, and takes too long, and leads to those traffic disruptions we all love) and make the other guy pay it. I'm not interested in turning those folk in, but I don't admire them either.

Most everyone seems to be interested in screwing the gov. out of 'its' tax money. My question is where does the gov. get 'its' tax money? I seem to remember that the only money the gov. has is what we the people give it in the form of our taxes.

If everyone paid their fair share then perhaps the taxes might not be quite so high.

Taxes, like government, are both necessary and ultimately good. If you think you believe otherwise, I would suggest a year or two of living on the economy in Iraq might change your mind....

Pay your taxes. The fines for using off-road fuel on the road are pretty steep (I believe $1000 for the first offense in Indiana, could be wrong). The Federal excise police don't have much of a sense of humor, either.
