Would an engine shake at idle if the trans mount is shot ?

What's up...

I recently changed my engine mounts and I never bothered to change the trans mount. The car was shake free until today. I'm thinking that something weak had to go and it might be the trans mount. It only does it when the car is in park, when I have it in gear it is fine...

Possible ?

thanks

Rough Idle

The 300 D has the same problem except rough idle in park or drive but only when running at temp not when cold. I thought abut the trans mount but haven't fixed it yet. I suspect dirty injectors that need a good cleaning and balance. I would be interested to hear the result if anyone saw an improvement with a trans mount change though.

I had my injectors cleaned and balanced about a month ago so it cannot be it.. I only get it when the car is HOT after a long run. If I let it sit for another 5 minutes and start it right up it runs fine.

When you changed the mounts, did you also change the engine shocks?

No I did not. The engine runs perfect except when in PARK or NEUTRAL. Would the engine shock matter in that aspect ?

It could. Mine would sometimes shake in park, but usually it was at idle in gear. I could give it just a tiny amount of pedal and it would go away. Give it a little more and it would then shake even worse than at idle.

I only have one shock on my 240D. The engine keeps going side to side though when it shakes. Not even up and down just perfectly SIDE to SIDE.

Does it look worn? Even if it doesn't, it may be part of the problem. The shocks were added to stop the side-to-side rock these engines naturally have. The weak mounts you replaced may have been taking up some of the slack and with the new mounts having harder rubber, more of it's probably being transfered to the chassis.

BTW, if the Trans mount does look worn, then it's a good idea to replace it. It's not to expensive. It's not likely to help any side-to-side shakes though.

Motor mount supplements

Just put new motor mounts on my 80 240d And the noise dampening is amazing.
My car doesn't have the engine shock absorbers shown in the manual online.
The hurried businessman that did the motor job put 10x1.5x50 hex heads in the bottom of the motor mounts that had the heads about even with the bottom of the frame, but not touching. With the the increased height of the undamaged motor mounts, this didn't pretend to work. It looked as if the motor mounts were meant to be bolted to the aluminum motor strut from the bottom by a 10x1.5x15 allen head screw. But, autozone didn't have those.
So, I bought two "Help" brand GM starter bolts,(10mmx1.5x6") which were long enough to go through the frame with enough clearance I was able to cushion between the bolt head and the underside of the frame with a 1"x1" block of rubber. (Chair caster blocks, actually. Chair casters that come with rubber blocks that fit up in the chair leg are available from WW Grainger etc.) I put permatex#2 on the thread to keep the screw from falling out.
Anyway the results are amazingly quiet, and I didn't replace the transmission mount.

I have this shaking problem to with my 300SD.
THe shocks are just fine...checked them...brand new motor mounts...the trans one is good.
I think my engine is just running too rough at idle. Perhaps injector cleaning/ip timing adjustment? Guess it is a diesel after all...just don't like watching crap shake around in my car at traffic lights

i changed my transmission mount and the car does seem smoother. I don't feel the hard shaking at idle. I also changed the engine shock as well.

I think the engine shocks are primarily to control the shake when the engine is shut off.

If it's rough especially at idle after a run, it could be the rack dampner bolt. Do a search and you'll see it's very easy to replace and not much $$.

i searched for the rack dampener bolt and I'm starting to think that a 240D would not have one.

where would this be located ?
