300D A/C redone, I can hang meat in the car now

Well, folks, it was hot in Southern California and the A/C compressor (York Piston) went out like a swiss watch after five years. It was as if I knew it from past experience, it starts with a squeeking belt, then the klicking noise in the compressor and not much further it will surrender by blowing WARM air. I took the opportunity to change also the Safety Neutral Switch (car wouldn't start in the "P" position) and the bill is attached.

I bickered quite a bit at the old italian and he knocked it down to $ 800 cash. The work is outstanding. Last year, I also changed the blower motor and found a new Servo, then clhanged all vacuum hoses goin in- and out of the dash and to the Servo and made sure that the flaps worked right.

I think we ought to scan and submit our invoices for us 'two left handed' people. I just happen to like air conditioning, can't do without in a suit and tie and driving through the desert of California.

Do you think this charge ($ 800.00) is fair for an excellent job?

All that counts is whether you are happy with it.... you probably save enough using your old car that you could pay several times that amount and still come out ahead at the end of the year...
AC is more important to some locations than others....It is very important and even life supporting where I live.

Sounds good to me. The previous owner of one of my 300td's had the a/c fixed to the tune of $1200. And it's not real cold. Converted to the new 34 freon and I suspect thats why it's not super cold. One day I'll do a search and see how to get it 100%, but here in southern Pa. the a/c season is about over so I'll wait until next season to look into it.

Cheers,

Bill

Here's a possible help for those who've converted to R-134a Qwikboost

Haven't tried it myself, but it sounds good on their website. And we know, everything on the internet is true!!

I have heard that Plati does a pretty good job. Have a couple of buddies that take their cars to him.

Plati

yes, Eric,he does a very good job. Be prepared for the guy to change everything he comes along his way when he works on a project. I remember, last year, that my 'regular' mechanic messed up the vacuum routing so badly, that neither heat nor cold air was coming anymore and threw his hands in the air. When Plati took over, I had almost given up hope. One day later, I was surprised to see how his mechanic re-routed the mess and everything was up and running!
Only thing I would recommend is, when turning in your automobile, ask upfront what it is going to cost.

I like how most of the info on their site is from 1998 and they to this day only have 3 distributors. Seems if this has been available since 98 and worked, it would have made more of a splash.
