I still think the 603 is a better engine then the 617!

After owning both of them, I must agree with Hattie. The 603 is more powerful, smoother, quieter, revs easier, and gets better fuel economy.

But the 617 is highly unlikely to crack its head in our lifetimes.

Yeah...
Unlike most teenage males, I don't idolize power and 7k RPM gassers...
I, oddly enough, look at reliability, torque, and fuel economy
I like that the 5 cylinder will last seemingly forever with major required repairs, gets me to school reliably every day (50miles round trip)
and I can go outside and work on it when I get bored :-P
But I can't bash the 6 cylinder...after all, it is still an OLD(er) mercedes diesel!
Quality... :-D

Everything has its place, I get my jollies with my honda that will safely rev to 9,000 rpm..................and I love driving my 300SD that weighs over twice as much and has just better than 1/2 the HP the honda has with twice the motor, they both get the same MPG believe it or not. They each excell in their own niche.

I'm in, my commute to school is only about 25 miles a day but I do it twice sometimes. I want fuel economy, I can't say I want a cheap car to run because my Toyota was king in that area. However I do want something fun that I can fix. The 603 gives me enough power to make me happy and with a "redline" just under 5k revs sky high for a diesel. Plus the W126 body is big for an I6 so lots of room to fix things.

Kinda hard to pull someone over to the SDL , when it's a money pit! :p

Sure, it's slow as hell off the line, but when that turbo kicks in, sweet

I used to think my 300sd was "slow as hell off the line" as well. I later learned that the lag was not due to "turbo lag" but rather the egr was stomping down on the engine in the lower rpm range. Once the tubo started to kick in, the egr would let the engine open up and put out power. This felt like massive turbo lag. However, once I dissabled the egr I was shocked; the turbo lag was gone (comparatively speaking). My car had way, way, way more power pre turbo. The power band smoothed out to the point that I really didn't notice pre-tubo post-turbo any more.

In other words; dissable the egr and the 300sd will feel like a totally different car off the line.

Good one plantman; but mine is a "money pit" that is the nick name my dad gave it. It does not apply to all SDL's! It is an upgrade from "old bomber" so I'm happy. Actually owning this car makes me fell like I'm in the Mercedes version of the movie!

So just to clear things up not all SDL's are money pits just ones owned by people who do nothing to it for 160k miles and 10 years.

Hey, I'll unzip for the pissing contest

617... 603... they're all the same. It's the ride improvement offered by 4" more wheelbase that sold me on the SDL.
