Anybody have an opinion on a borescope?

I must be sick in the head. I don't work on anybody's car but my own (if I can help it) and I'm thinking of dropping 250 bucks on a borescope. SLI Lighting PV636 is the model I am considering. Do I need my head examined, or what?

Do you think I can sell my wife on the idea that it will be useful to perform a colonoscopy on myself?

Any advice or sympathy appreciated...

You would be the envy of all the old mechanics on the forum... Very high on the ' one upsmanship' scale. Does that help ?

Very handy! I'd love to have access to one that would fit into the Volvo -- something is wrong in there (no start) and I don't want to pull the head just to check.

I can see your wife now with the scope in hand, jar of vaseline in the other and a big grin on her face.

I am somewhat dismayed that you guys have put forth such a pathetic effort to help me ward off this overwhelming compulsion to have a borescope. In fact, it's almost too late. By tomorrow I will have called the company and placed the order. In all fairness, I must say that you will only have yourselves to blame when I start posting interesting and fascinating photos from the interior of my engine, and you then find yourselves afflicted with this same malady.

Is there such a thing as Toolaholics Anonymous?

A lens on the end of a flexible extension that can go through small access holes like a glow plug hole so that you can see inside places you couldn't normally look.

Maybe you can tell her that you want to look through her ears to see if she has anything between them for letting you buy your borescope.

Na, that would be a nice tool to have especially when you drop bolts into the intake manafold or something bad like that.

Can you get it to take little biopsies on the way in or out?

Find a locksmith that owns one (many professionals in the safe business use them) and make friends and offer to rent it or, if he really likes you borrow it when you need it. just an idea.

Have you looked on Ebay for one? This would be a great tool to add a small water line on, and wash out the evaporator (with out pulling the dash apart).

They're available there all the time, but there's enough demand for them that a "killer deal" is rare. There's always the chance that one would stumble across one, listed with a poor title and description (so that it wouldn't show up in most searches) in an inappropriate category (so that likely buyers wouldn't just happen across it) with a low starting price and no reserve (or with a crazy low "buy it now" price).

As I said, rare, but such things can happen - I got a very nice stereomicroscope that way...

Good point Eskimo...
If you find one listed as " Boarscope" you may be the only bidder...

Dieselliber;

Just tell the wife you are starting a side business and renting the tool out to us less fortunate folks here!
