If you were going to make a cash offer on this car, about what would it be?

This 300D looks nice, and I really like an eb#y posting that shows some effort...also, car is a pleasant drive away. Appreciate any thoughts...

$4250 reserve is about $1200 to $1500 to much for the car with 265,000 miles and some major rust showing and probably some hidden IMHO.

Exactly, look at the rear quarter, think about how much rust is hidden behing that bumper corner. That puppy needs a lot of rust repare.

If your close you've got to look at it to know. I just went over to SoCal to look at a 220d. Pictures looked great, but when I actually saw it I didn't want it for anything other than to pull the motor. Want to put one in a IH Scout. You can definately find very good ones for $2500 - 2,000.

This is a sad story. It appears that considerable effort has been put forth to maintain the cosmetics of the interior, exterior, and engine compartment. Unfortunately, this effort did not extend to making sure the rust did not take hold and prosper. The seller states that the vehicle has been serviced by the local M/B dealer and can be driven anywhere. But, the a/c does not work and the cruise does not work.

You are looking at $1300. to fix the ac and the cruise (typical) and then you still must contend with the rust and a motor and transmission that have 265,000 miles on them.

The seller had done a fine job with the listing and, like all good used car dealers, someone will bite on it.

You should not. There are better choices for the same money.

I change the ammount I would offer to $50, after reading the description, I really hate it when people put the following in the listings:

"All well maintained miles and many more to go ... it's not unusual for these 5-cylinder Mercedes diesels to clock over one million miles. The currant mileage is now 265,240 or so"

I call that "marketese", and I hate it too.

Most times when I see an ad that says that, I stop right there and go on to the next one.

Do mileage claims count as "marketese" in your book, too? This one says that these vehicles, "get an average of 30+ miles per gallon".

I've seen a number of ads for 300 turbodiesels that say "35 MPG".

For a lot of car/driver/driving combinations, I think that even the 30 MPG figure would count as "puffing".

I know the seller very well and would NEVER consider any of his cars.

PLEASE NON OF YOU BID__YOU WILL GET BURNED!!!!!!!!!!

Go look at it in person. His descriptions are not accurate. Notice how fuzzy the camera is? The 240 he also has for sale shows a rip on the side of the drivers seat although he says the inside is nice. Not only that but would you believe the "MB Shop" where he has his work done puts 10w40 in the crankcase? How reliable can that shop be? [Oh no-more oil talk.]

If you don't believe me, go ahead and buy it. Find out for yourself what a crook this guy is. His great feedback is because most of his vehicles "sell" through shill bids. He will want to sell you the car before the auctions end, privately, so you cannot leave negative feedback because you didn't buy it through Ebay. DON"T FALL FOR THIS TRICK!!!! If you must, buy it through Ebay so you can leave him the negative feedback he deserves.

Please, nobody from here bid on it and if you do and you win the car, remember I will come back and say "I told ya so"

Good luck...

Cheers,

Bill

Yeah tell me about it. The best combined/average mileage I've seen from my 300SD with 70% highway driving and no A/C (during the winter) was 24mpg! These days all I get is 22-23mpg. And I keep my car well maintained. Yet everyday I see 300SDs listed on eBay as getting 30mpg! Give me a break. In fact back in the day the EPA estimated fuel mileage for the 300SD was 22mpg/city and 25mpg/highway, and EPA estimates are almost always over the real world figure by about 15%.

To be absolutely clear, my comments were offered only in the very best and friendliest spirit! "Tell us how you really feel" is the sort of thing I often say at work when someone goes ballistic, especially when I have reason to believe that their feelings are completely justified!

I really do appreciate it when someone with real factual experience regarding something for sale (or the seller of said item) shares that experience with the forum. I reckon it has saved some individuals here lots of headache and/or heartache, and certainly time and trouble.
