I hear what you're saying and I have a comtemporary diesel - love it. But the older benz's have character and that retro look. The 86+ look OK, but just not the same for me. If I want to go 100 in complete silence I'll take my TL but it just doesn't have the same character as the 123's and earlier.

The hood pad also keeps the engine heat off the hood paint. You look at a car with faded paint on the hood and nowhere else, you know there's no pad underneath. Make sure you get it replaced before that new paint goes on.

What color are you going with-the original?? Just curious.

"I like your choice of tunes AND you're a birds fan. Stop by when you get back in the area... "

Here we go...my 123 car eatin' up the pavement. Note Orange (original) paint which displays my Oriole pride.

Thinking about a road trip myself this summer, but can't decide where to go.

I find the drone of the engine relaxing on trips (especially the diesel), what I can't stand is wind leak in the weatherstriping on my mothers 2004 Buick.

Did you take that picture while driving?!!! The paint looks really good for original but it won't last long if ya keep taking pictures while motoring

Old Navy has a GTG every spring and I very well may show up next year. I'll flip ya for who drives if you want to go. Mine will have fresh paint on it by then. Unfortunately, I've got that [ugly] sand/tan color, which will be going back on after the whole car is stripped. I would like some other MB color but my door jambs, etc. are like brand new so I'm kinda locked in.

BTW-A friend of mine has a classic car paint shop and he'll be doing the work

Cheers,

Bill

I too prefer my Mazda 929 for long trips. It is entirely unfrantic at speed. My 83 300D though is nice in the winter with the windows up. It does feel a lot more solid at warp speed. My best drive this past season though was with my 58 220S, 750 miles, lots of highway at 75~80, and SMOOOOTH!! Quiet and nice driving. It's a hand-full/foot-full in town driving with no power steering and a 4-speed manual but it does shine on the highway. My other 300, a coupe has a noisy engine needing a little injector work maybe. The front-end is getting some work next summer, mostly just minor bushing work. It is actually a great driver other than it wanders a bit. My all time best drive ever in my life was bringing a 62 Rolls from RI to Fla for a guy I worked for. Rode much better than any car has a right to.

Bill,

Yep, took the picture while driving, but was only going about 10mph.

I like the sand/beige color on the 123 car. Looks like a classic German taxi from the 70s/80s. They still use that beige color today for all the taxis, but the Austrian cabbies can have whatever color MB taxi they want.

I will keep an eye out for news of ON's get-2-gether.

Mike

I find my SDL feels at home on the highway, I am turning 3k at 70 and only slightly more at 80. I get more wind noise from the sunroof then engine noise! I need to fix that sunroof!

On hand on the wheel seat back just gliding along! Of course a good sound system and lots of cd's and/or sat radio is a must!

Japanese cars are VERY quiet because there are very stiff fines in Japan for noisy cars.

Benz is usually very quiet, so I would look for non-obvious things that would make noise on the highway -- bad door gaskets, rotten hood pad (it does make quite a difference), bad tranny mounts/flex disks/center bearing support and/or other suspension rubber, and most important, a dead muffler.

You won't notice the noise around town, particularly, but on the highway it will drone terribly. The exterior usually doesn't rust that much, but you may be "baffle free" inside!

Bad engine shocks and engine mounts will also transmit much more noise to the body, so much that you will be astonished when you replace them.

Benz has always made high rpm engines, I suppose for several reasons. The lowest reving one I've got is the 87 300D, turns about 2400 rpm at 65. Not bad noise-wise now that I've finally gotten the bad links replaced in the rear and new tires (still need an alignment after replacing the strut mounts). The 220 is running 4500 at 80 mph -- quite an experience!

Peter

The OM617 is pretty noisy at speed. Doesn't bother me, but it certainly isn't as quiet as a gasser, or for that matter one of the more recent diesel engines. I believe there's a couple of threads where listers added sound deadening material to the doors and between the firewalls, and reported a significant noise reduction.

I love the sound of my 617 at about 75mph, its just a smooth hum, and it does it without any strange sounds.....such as those our minivan loves to make....it will "groan" (literally) when you have it too the floor trying to get up to about 110mph, it can do it.....but you can almost watch the tank needle fall, and the groaning noises aren't very comforting Its got a 3.0 litre V6....rated at like 168 hp or something.....above 45-55 the torque is gone. Just rev's to about 6500rpm (quite loud!!) and slowly climbs the needle higher, allll the way to around 105, then thats about it. The diesels have an incredible amount of power even up at 80-85, its awesome. Yes they are louder than the van, but far smoother/powerful feeling.

Mike i do kinda like the color on that car but you see I'm a blue guy at heart. Just couldn't find one with the white exterior/blue interior.

A guy in N.J. had a dark blue one with blue interior but I wanted one with less mileage. Really a good looker but 300k scared me off. He was not the original owner and had no receipts for any of the claimed service work.

Maybe the sand color will grow on me and for what it's gonna cost to get it painted I'd better start liking it soon

Cheers,

Bill

I like the sound on the 617 at high speeds. My dad calls it "music". Last week while driving back to Houston from Galveston, he requested I turn off the radio so he could hear the diesel hum. I liked it! I was cruising around 65-70 mpg, I'm not rich enough for speeding tickets. I also found out the other day while moving the cars that the SD is quiter than the D is.
