temp fix for primer pump
hello,I had to use the primer pump for the first time on my "new" 300d to change the spin on fuel filter. what a mess, leaked everwhere-- it started right up but I could not get the pump to not dribble. i reset it a couple of times but it still leaks. I am going to get the new style pump but for right now is there anything I can do do for a temporary fix? I'd like to ba ble to drive it while I am waiting for the new part. thanks,

Same thing happened to me shortly after I bought my car.....there is a small rubber washer/o ring at the bottom of the pump mechanism. It seals when you screw the pump back down. It took me a little while to figure it out, but I noticed it after I took the pump out for inspection. The o ring was in place but very brittle and broken - hence no seal. I went to a local farm supply store (I assume a good hardware store will work) and found a selection of o rings. I bought one just big enough to muscle back on the unit but small enough to be tight. Worked like a champ. I ordered a new style right away since the old style units leak when you pump them and make a mess. I figured as often as we replace filters/hoses I would use the pump enough to justify the $20. The o ring held for several days until my new style arrived - probably would last for a while yet. Hopefully your problem is this simple. Good luck
The swap out went great and I have used the new style since - very nice

Those pesky primer pumps... I have a new one in the box waiting to be installed when I change my fuel filters in 5k miles. So do you just take a wrench and unscrew it and then screw the new one down? Thats what it looks like to me.

In theory, that's all there is to it. But you need to deal with the reality that, with the engine installed in the vehicle, access is not exactly unrestricted. A crows foot will come in handy.

I read on a couple Threads where a Vice Grip was used to remove the old type primer pump.

so it is really easy to remove and replace all you really need to do to make it easy on your self is have a 17mm deep socket to remove the fuel inlet nipple its the rearward one when looking at the pump. then the pump should be easy to reach to break it loose then remove the rest of the way by hand... I fount that both the nipple and the pump only needed to be broke free then they both turned easy by hand so very quick.. the only hard part i would say is tightening it back down once replaced. other than that it was a 15min job to replace the O-ring and put it all back together..

A balloon or condom pulled down over a leaky pump should stop intrusion of air into the fuel system until the can be replaced. You can cite this post when someone finds the condoms in your glove compartment.
