Where is my Engine Number? - 1987 300D 603
Need to know the engine number to order parts that have a "before" and "after" version based on this number.
Do I get this off the engine or is it on a plate under the hood? Can't find this info in the Hayes manual or the MB CD manual. Thanks, Ken300D

If the 603 is like the 602 the number will be on a small flange that is located just in front of the output of the high pressure injection line on the IP for cylinder #1.
You may have to clean the flange to see the numbers - I did. |

If you call Phil at Fastlane to order parts, he can look it up based on your VIN.

AFAIK the engine number on a 603 is on a horizontal surface of the block behind the head.

I found the number on the flat spot just in front of the injection pump. Have to say it looks a lot more like a MB part number than a serial number. I have not had time to look on the block behind the head. Is that place something you read from the top or from the side? That is, which way would the number be facing.
And, I'm giving this the bump in case other opinions are available. Ken300D

Email or PM your VIN to me. I may be able to look it up.

TimFreeh is right. The engine number is carved into a horizontal section of the block just ahead of the IP. Pretty easy to read if that area is clean. If not, give it a spritz of brake parts cleaner.
The tag behind the cylinder head is some sort of bar code. Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL |

The number on the flat spot just in front of the injection pump is of the form:
03 960 12 001 355 The engine number listed as the change point on the tensioner lever is 049508. I would guess that I'm before the break point, but do I really have engine number 1,355 in the series ?? What about all those 1986 300SDLs made first? Ken300D

engine #
If it's the original engine , call 1 800 222-0100 (Mercedes customer svc.)
with your V.I.N. they'll read you the O.E. engine# over the Phone. But, Phil can do the same thing! |

Your number appears to be plausible but there should be a "6" in front of the "03 960 12...." - maybe its hidden by the valve cover gasket?
The engine in the SDL's was a 603.961 while the 87 W124 was a 603.960. It does seem a bit strange since the SDL, at least in the USA, predates your 300D. I have no idea how a 961 differes from a 960 version of the OM603. You do seem to have an early version of the OM603.960 - maybe it's collectable.... Tim |
