Bose Linear Electromagnetic Suspension

Quote:
This is the latest innovation in suspension systems, invented by BoseŽ. The idea is that instead of springs and shock absorbers on each corner of the car, a single liner electromagnetic motor and power amplifier can be used instead.
Inside the linear electromagnetic motor are magnets and coils of wire. When electrical power is applied to the coils, the motor retracts and extends, creating motion between the wheel and car body. It's like the electromagnetic effect used to propel some newer rollercoaster cars on launch, or if you're into videogames and sci-fi, it's like a railgun.

Sorry I don't seem to be able to link to the articles I was reading. The first article is under the suspension bible under the above link.

Great, until your alternator fails, you blow a fuse, or a squirrel chews up your wires, and the car drops 3 inches and loses all suspension on the highway.

Or until some joker hooks an audio signal up to the amplifier instead of the positioning computer, and your entire car hops down the road like a bunny rabbit playing 'la bamba'.

Actually, its a good idea.

peace,
sam

You could run over a downed power line and it could railgun you and your car into lower orbit.

Seriously, there would be a new set of problems and who knows what could happen? Kinda like MagLev suspension for a car.

If this idea is to automotive handling what Bose speakers are to high fidelity audio, I'd want no part of it!

Seriously, though... looks interesting.

I totally like the idea...and for a sporty car or whatever..cool!
However
I still like that you can still take a merc. diesel, start it...pull all the wires off it..and still drive down the road.
Something to be said about simplicty and old design/not overengineering hehe

But that wouldn't stop me from owning a SEPERATE CAR with such a getup on it

I suppose, one of the reasons why I bought the 123 over the 126 because its simpler. Granted mechanically their almost idential, the 123 just has that bare bones simple over engineered feeling that I don't find as much in a 126. I'll put that Bose system in a mid 90's Saab 900 Turbo hatchback, as Roy cringes at the thought of Saab. <-- randomness
