spark plug in tail pipe???

I have 2 ideas in order to make my 300d a little more fun to mess around in since I'm not gonna burn anybody off the line.

Idea 1 is the idea that some hot rods use. They wire a spark plug in the tail pipe and then unburnt fuel and hot exhaust gases ignite 'causing a flame to shoot out the back. I'm not so sure that with a diesel the same theory would work though. Anybody have any educated comments??

Idea 2 set up an injector in the exhaust manifold hooked up to a swith in the car. Then when someone is tailing me I just push the button which releases straight diesel into my hot exhaust creating lots of black smoke and hereby sending a message. Anybody know how this may work?

Sounds like fun, but would end-up being a very expensive idea. Neither your Tail pipe, nor your exhaust manifold have been designed to withstand the explosive forces that will be generated by the ignition of unburned fuel within these two components.

The joke may end-up being on you.

They used to do something like that in WW2 for a sort of smokescreen but I don't remember the details, LIke it was diesel fuel into a jeep exhaust manifold. A Jerry rig in the field modification.

But it could be an urban legend.

A spark plug in the tail pipe will make nice flames if you have a, carb, no cats, and a gas engine. I don't know of any diesel MB that has these!

As to the smoke screen a gallon of super cheap oil would work well.

Ive heard of guys who just inject a little propane within the last foot of the tailpipe, and having a spark plug right after. You would have to make a ignition out of a old car coil and a capaciter. Id like to do this sometime.

Idea #2 is funny to us, but all its gonna do is pee off some tree hugger, giving them even more excuses to keep diesels off the road.

Cheers,

Bill

They are called flame thrower kits, not legal in some states.

No unburnt 'gases' in a diesel engine...atleast wayyyyy less than a gasser.
Its a sorta neat idea but would probably end up melting your rear plastic bumper parts.
Search the forum for the smokescreen idea...if I play with the throttle I have a stock smoker...
poor oil

I agree with you Eric !!
Maybe he would like to hold a grenade with the pin removed between his legs while he uses his fingers to count to 10 !!
If he wants to see flames & things blown up, he should watch the mythbusters. The PD & Fire Dept have better things to do than sort out these sorts of things.

Back in the day, the spark plug in the tail pipe (last 5 inches), some metered in gas etc was a lot fun. It reminds me of my early days with hod rods. I can recall truckers with a 2x4 in each of the stacks. More of a spark thrower than a flame thrower. Try it now and I guess they would put you under the jail.

It isn't and it actually became a legitimate piece of military equipment. Up until the late '70s to early '80s there was a vehicle mounted oil burner. They came up with the smoke 'fogger' when I was in and it is supposed to be much less toxic than actually burning the oil.
