How do I remove primer pump?

Hi, all-- how do I remove the old white primer pump? The new one has nice wrench-friendly flats, but the old one is a smooth cylinder- nowhere to put a wrench. I'm afraid if I grab it with channellocks or visegrips I'll only mangle it but not remove it, and really be up the creek. What's the right way?
Thanks, and hope for me. Dave

I have removed said pump with a 17mm stubby open wrench, there is a hex there somewhere, or was. I have also removed it with a pair of vise grips, as I was going to replace it anyway. It's on there, so be prepared to use some elbow grease. You shouldn't need to bleed any air out. Hope this helps. "Have fun in your garage"

I could get absolutely nothing to fit in there. Tried faucet wrench or whatever, no dice. I ended up using vice grips. It takes a lot of muscle but at the end you'll have a sore shoulder and a new improved primer pump.

vice grips

Vice grips come in handy for this task. Most don't own crows feet but everybody has a vice grip sitting in the bottom of the toolbox.

I cut a 17 mm 1.00 wrench in about half. The flats on the white pump are very low but there I believe. I think the modern black replacement is a 19 mm but has been awhile.

Sigh........ We still just can't seem to get car information either in the body of the posts, or preferably the signatures. Snap-to mister....

A 15/16 SAE or 24mm (they are the same size) Crows Feet wrench attached to an extension and ratchet will remove an original style (white knob) pump easily.

Just grab it with a vice grip and give it a good firm twist...it doesn't matter if you crush the body a little since you are throwing it out anyway. You can do the whole job in 5-10 minutes an not have to putz around with any special tools.

The only trick is, as I recall, there is a copper crush washer you need to replace but I believe the new one will come with it...just make sure you get the old one out first.
