What is the Normal OIL Consumption at 3000 miles on your Diesel?

I'm wondering what is the normal amount of consumption that a Diesel burns by 3000 miles? How many qts do you have to add to your car per 3K miles. I'm sure it varies.

I'm burning about a qt of oil per 3k miles on my 603. with 169k miles.

What about you?

Scott98 12-02-2004 10:33 AM

None. 617 with 207k.

Oil use

I have an 84 300D with 272k on her. Oil use per 3000 miles, less than 1/2 quart..... :D

Rick Miley 12-02-2004 11:18 AM

E300 - none.
240D - all of it.

SD Blue 12-02-2004 11:34 AM

Weeeeeeell, it is too hard to tell until I get all the leaks fixed. :D

Let's just say 3 qts. with the leaks. :P

Hatterasguy 12-02-2004 12:07 PM

Nothing.

P.E.Haiges 12-02-2004 12:15 PM

300SDLTOM,

Both my 300SDs use practically no oil in 3000 miles. The one 300SD used to use about a quart in 3000 miles but switching to Castrol Syntec decreased the oil consumption to about 1 qt in 10,000 miles.

EDIT: I should note that this miraculous decrease in oil consumption did not happen overnight. It took ~30,000 miles to "clean out the engine".

Rick Miley 12-02-2004 12:20 PM

P.E., what about your SDL? That might be more applicable for Tom.

DieselHead 12-02-2004 12:54 PM

When I used non-synthetic, I'd have to add about a quarter to a half quart between every oil change, now that I've switched to Amsoil synthetic (past three oil changes), I haven't had to add any at all.

dataiv 12-02-2004 12:55 PM

No oil added in between oil changes on the 300D 2.5. Until I switched to synthetic I was adding about 1/2 liter every 3000km. Since I switched I haven't had to add any.

P.E.Haiges 12-02-2004 01:04 PM

Rick,

I've only driven the SDL ~25,000 miles and the oil is still at the full mark on the dipstick.

240td used about 1litre (quart??) every 1000 miles at 1st, and doesnt quite use that now.. my 190d i havnt changed the oil yet (new to me) previous owner said it didnt use any

oldnavy 12-02-2004 01:18 PM

None till my oil filter assembly mount started leaking. 150,000 miles.

84300DT 12-02-2004 01:35 PM

less than 1 quart...

pawoSD 12-02-2004 01:48 PM

Neither of ours use anything in 2500-3000 miles. :D Our van.......does.

luckys420 12-02-2004 03:51 PM

drips a little, but never goes past the level indicator.

frogboy 12-02-2004 04:15 PM

I have a leak somewhere, but before that I would not lose any oil, and that is on the regular Chevron Delo15w-40 :)

BusyBenz 12-02-2004 05:46 PM

Of the three MB's I have, two gassers, one smoker, the 190E 2.3, uses a lot, needs valve guides and is why it's not on the road lately!

The 450SL is too early to say, haven't driven it far enought to need an oil change yet, but it hasn't changed on the dip stick in 500mi.

The 87 300D leaks not a drop, nor have I ever needed to add oil between it's 7K oil changes. Zip! :) BB

DENNIS 12-02-2004 09:04 PM

Hello, Dennis here, the oil needs to stay beteen the two marks on a w123 300d, i think about a pint per 3000 is good if you don't have any leaks,i have a 300td that will use about that, it has 138k on the eng.great car forever--- Dennis :)

rwthomas1 12-02-2004 11:20 PM

If I fill it right to the top line of the dipstick it'll use about 1/2quart so its down to halfway between the full and add lines and then stay there. So I just put in 6 and 1/2quarts now and it doesn't use any in 4K. Go figure. 300d with 160K. RT

123c 12-03-2004 12:00 AM

Right now about 5 quarts...

You need to sell your oil burner. Your head is warped, your rings are shot and I'd bet the tranny is weak.

I don't live far from you and will bring cash. :D

My 300SD used to consume no oil at all. Now, I'm certain it still doesn't consume any, however it has developed a leak from somewhere under the car. I changed the oil pan gasket 10,000 miles ago so it can't be from there. I'll have to check later. Just a few drops per night. :P

Lance Allison 12-03-2004 09:45 AM

I have never needed to add oil between 5-6k mile change intervals to my 603 with 300k miles on the clock.

I drive the TDI on the highway between 800 and 1200 mi a week most of the time, so it's change intervals are 8-10k. It now has 280k miles. Depending on what my average speed is throughout the interval, I generally add between 1/2 and 1 qt at around 5k miles to keep it topped off. It uses a bit more when the average speed is faster. When it gets to point where I'd need to add another 1/2 qt, then it gets changed.

I use either Amsoil 15w40 syn or Delvac 1 5w40 in the MB depending on our temperature and Delvac 1 in the TDI year-round.

I'm noticeing over all the post of this OIL CONSUMPTION thread, that some diesels use more or less Oil and in some cases none at the 3K mile mark. Everyone has either a 617 or a 603? So, where is the consumption going for those who use alot of OIL? Is it from bad gaskets or is it wearing engines, bad heads on different engines? Most likely a combination of all. I'm not sure on mine. I open my hood and see a bright shiny black oil from about the head on down. I'm sure if these were gassers they'd already be in the shops with the hoods off and engines out. Any explanations or theories? :bulb:

P.E.Haiges 12-03-2004 12:58 PM

300SDLTOM,

Have you checked you valve cover gasket? They get hard from heat and age and start to leak.

Not to brag, awww what the hell. :tongue3: :devilish: .....you could take a white glove over my 603, top to bottom, and still be white! :D :D

Really!

It has now 240K and has had new front and rear seals, new intake, exhaust and crossover gaskets, and that's about all!

Sounds like yours leaks from upper gaskets at least! :sun_smile BB

Yes, and it seems to be leaking some there, but i'm also wondering what other locations it could leak other than the oil pan gasket. I put a new oil pan on about 8 months ago due to hitting an object in the road, so i'm thinking that area would be okay. The last time I was at my indy for repairs etc. I asked him if everything looked okay and his answer was, "yeah all looks well, except you have oil leaks that we probably need to locate". Of course the engine is oily so it's hard to pinpoint the direct source of leakage. I'd have to power wash the engine first I suppose.

One place to look which is almost never checked is on the back side of the head......between the firewall and head. There is a hex plug (about the size of a dime) with aluminum crush washer. On the 300D, you need to use a mirror to see it. Dont know about the 126, but anyway they have been known to get loose and wheep oil too! :) BB

It's lossing a little oil now that the oilfilter housing has started leaking.

JDmills 12-03-2004 09:26 PM

Now THAT is a sweet looking engine room!!!! Wish mine was not covered in oil the way it is, but I have a leaker, burner, dripper... so I am gonna use some oil....

oldnavy 12-03-2004 09:42 PM

That was taken after a 300 mile trip through the Ozark hill's.

Benster Tom 12-04-2004 07:05 PM

Nice and clean Old Navy. Is putting a new gasket all that is required on the OIL FILTER HOUSING? How much labor is requred?

oldnavy 12-04-2004 07:22 PM

Yup that's about it, and I would say it would be about 2 hr job from the looks of it. Now days with the arthritis it's pay the mechanic and drive on.

Benster Tom 12-04-2004 07:28 PM

Yeah your probably right, I was looking at a 1984 300 SD today, which I believe is in excellent condition. However, He had a leak which was very visible and it was coming from the oil filter housing. I was just wondering what all was required in taking in repairing it.

oldnavy 12-04-2004 07:52 PM

Is it the green one here 84 300 SD that Aaron has?

Hatterasguy 12-04-2004 08:05 PM

Not to brage but I will! :D You could eat off my 603! I only have 3 minor oil leaks that I will hunt down and address next summer. Oh and the bottom of the IP leaks every so slightly I need to seal that up to.
