Cold Start Problems
1982 240D 235K miles, known low compression problem.
Just went through an episode of hard start to no start problems now that the temps have dropped up here in Canada. Adjusted the valves but still no go. Suspected the starter and removed it with some great advice from this Forum.(Mine was pulled through the top) Armature was shorted and bushing was shot. $190 CDN to completely overhaul. Spins great now but still hard starting if not plugged in for a few hours before starting. Changed oil the other day with Mobil 1 0w40 and added a can of Restore. Engine now starts near instantly at below freezing temps without block heater plugged in. Changed to synthetic oil after reading cold start advice from this Forum. Thanks for all the great advice. |

I also have a 240D and I took out the starter and replaced it with a 300D TURBO one so it cranks and starts alot better. I just also found out that my NEW glow plugs were shot after only 6 months. I could not figure out why my car was starting the way it was till I changed the plugs...
![]() I also just changed the oil today with mobil 1 for improved starts. It starts without even the slightest hesitation.
