Need ideas on what MB to look for.

Hello,
My sister just got married and I let her take my 85 300SD along with her. Now I need another Mercedes! I have only driven the 300SD so I really don't know what the others are like which is why I am asking opinions from those of you that have driven 126's and 124's.
What I want is a car that I can drive on long trips comforatbly, get really good fuel milege, has good power and is economical to maintain, simple enough for an average guy like me to work on, I am fairly comfortable with working on engines as well as maintenence.
I really liked the 300SD, the only improvements I can think of are. It is a bit loud, I would like better fuel economy, I would like more power, especially on take off, the SD was a little pathetic in my opinion. I liked the simplicity but a little more refinement would be nice. I would like to check out the newer (87) 300D and 300SDL. I read the 300D with the 6 cyl. diesel is fast, which I like. What kind of fuel milege would I expect? The SDL is nice too but is it that much better than the SD? How would it compare to the SD and the 300D in fuel milege and power? How are the newer 6 cyl. to work on?
90% of my driving would be highway. Easy cold starting is a big plus! Price is a big factor as well.
Anyway, any suggestions? Thanks

Talking You don't want much do you?

How much are you willing to spend? The 91 350 may be a bit pricey compared to a 1985 300SD. I only have slow ones....

Oh yeah, I would like to stay around 3-4 thousand $ range. Interior should be in good shape, I don't care if it needs a paint job or has been through a hail storm because I can fix the exterior for almost nothing, my family does autobody for a living. I just want something that is fun, comfortable and affordable to drive that will last for a long time.

I wish you lived closer to me. I'm getting my td painted soon and it's costing me two arms and leg.

I do demand quality though.

Cheers,

Bill

A 300SDL is enough of an improvement over a 300SD to make it worth a look at any available to you. For some reason, my SDL doesn't pull as hard off the line as either of the SDs I had, but once it gets rolling it keeps pulling until you're ahead of traffic. Both mileage and power are better than what you'll get from an SD in similar condition. It's also quieter. I don't know if it's a quieter engine or the doing of encapsulation panels.

The original cylinder head of an 86-87 SDL or 87 D/TD is susceptible to cracking. A new replacement head will cost you $2500/DIY to $4000/shop. I don't have stats on how many develop cracks.
