left axle shaft break on 124
At a local indie, I saw a 124 - 1987 300D T(wagon) with a broken axle on the left. It had fractured right at the outer boot. Broken very cleanly. Other parts of wheel assemble are pretty rusty, but I don't see how corrosion could account for this break.
Has anyone seen this? I have a 124 300d, and am wondering if I should worry about such a thing. |

I knew I had a bad axle a couple of years ago, but I hadn't gotten around to fixing it. The boot looked good, but the cv joint inside was toast. Anyway, the axle broke right by the cv joint. Clean break.
one half shaft later, the car was back on the road. Actually, two half shafts later, I replaced both -- one as preventative. THis was with a 201 190D at about 370kmi.
