Unhappy I put gasoline in my diesel tank!

Man was I just not thinking today. Normally, here in my area, the diesel pumps are "green". Today I pulled up to a pump that had a green label, not thinking, which i did have alot on my mind at that time started pumping gasoline into my diesel car. I was lucky to be about 10miles from my Father's shop and he had a wrecker pick it up. He's going to pull the tank off for me and empty it out. Does anyone know of anything else that needs to be done? What a lovely day.

hmm. i guess that's about it.. just drain it ang fill er up with diesel...unless you ran it and it started to smoke and all. then i'd suggest you look deeper into the things that the gasoline might have damaged...

I've heard you can have up to 20% diesel in your tank. So you shouldn't have over 4-5 gallons max. I put about 3 gallons in my tank sometimes during the winter. It keeps it flowing better.
Thanks
David

Well I put 7 gallons in there, when all of a sudden I got that gasoline scent going up my nose, and I was like, "Sh-t", with a few more, "bleep, bleeps". I was sick and I mean sick. It's an awful feeling. I didn't try starting it, I just don't want to take that risk.

I'd just siphon it out if anything...doesn't seem like dropping the whole tank just for that is required..
Get what you can out...and fill the rest up with diesel and go.
If you are worried, get under the car and pull the fuel lines and drain the gas out that way...
That should leave you with < 1gal

Easy enough...

How much did you put in? Just siphon some out and top if off with diesel. If you didn't start it, all the lines shoud be ok.

It'll run fine with a mix.

May not be a bad idea to add a healthy shot of your favorite diesel additive to help with lubricity.

If you put in 6 gallons, add another 6 gallons of filtered sump oil. It will run well and not smell like it is burning engine oil.
Or, add 6 gallons of filtered vegetable oil. It will smell much nicerthan petroleum diesel.
Just about anything will work - what you are trying to do, is to add enough "cetane" (compression ignition) to allow the engine to run with a uel which has a high "octane" (spark ignition)

Why drop the tank? Don't ask me how I know this.

Go to the local parts store and buy a cheapo universal style electric fuel pump. You can get them for about $20. Hook it up to your fuel feed AFTER the prefilter and hook the electricals up to your battery and keep a few gas cans ready and pump away! Downside is that you may have to charge your battery afterwards but it is a whole lot cleaner and easier than dropping the tank!

Dump it in the shrubs of the jerk that lives down the street.....................

or better yet fill his gas tank up with it at 3am.

Of course that may not be ethical or legal.......and if you do it, do so at your own peril.

Or you could just put a couple gallons in at every fillup. It will be in a small enough concentration to not worry about. And add your favorite additive like suggested above.

You really don't have to pull the tank on the SDL's. Just pull off the two cloth lines under the tank and it will drain dry, while your under their get a new o ring for the tank strainer pull that out and clean it up.

Don't worry we all screw up at one time or another. You did the right thing at least and didn't start it.

Well for me I only had about 1/3 of a tank of diesel left and then dumped that gasoline on top of it. Probably will get it up on the lift and drain the tank and then add some diesel addative and then fill it up with DIESEL.
