I wonder if the AC Servo is still functional? If the guy took the time to transplant a small block chevy, then he should have took the time and did away with the AC Servo

Butchery? Depends on perspective. Maybe the owner had a free 350 Chevy and the SD had a bad motor? If you are short on cash and have the time and talent "necessity is the mother of invention" You could also turn up the power and really freak some riceboys out. Imagine getting smoked by an old "diesel" benz.... RT

As much as we all may lament the sacrilegious destruction of a finely engineered machine, yet is this not the season to perhaps forgive,if not condone such crack-brained neanderthalism?

They do it to series III Jaguars as well,is it any wonder Kerry lost!

Season's greetings....................

What would justify it?
That kind of swap must take considerable modification, when you could just find another beautiful MBZ engine to breathe new life into her.
Forgiveness perhaps, condone=never.

Heck, if they got that kind of time and talent, why not start a business swapping auto for manual trannys?
Theres a good use for talent

Chevy 350. Garbage motor??? You might want to tap the brake on that one. It's not diesel, but they're far from garbage.

Jimmy, I didn't want to chime in and start a war, but I feel the same way. The small block Chevy was a major advancement in the design of a V-8 motor. Remember, the basic design has been around since 55. That's nearly fifty years before it's recent retirement for the newer design V-8s. It's design has a great oiling system and cooling system. Would I stick one in a nice Mercedes, probably not. But if I had a beater around, it'd be an interesting project to build a hot rod 123 .

Hmm...
Interesting...
Cunning...

But not to my personal tastes.
Every time I mix Domestic and German engineering, I loose a pint of blood

The bug was mean when I restored it...poor fingers/knuckles

Ya, those are great gasser motors, no doubt.
And one can compare gassers all day long.
It is just the contrast of the MBZ diesel....that fantastic German engineering....an engine which easily lasts 2-3 times the miles of most any gasser....
A class of its own.

The SBC is a pretty good all around performer. Very cheap to rebuild and very reliable. I currently have a 72 280SE 350/700R4 conversion that runs very well.
One day I came out of an auto parts store and some young guys were looking under the hood of a rice burner. I walked past and saw a nice strut brace, air induction, other performance stuff...
I'm parked next to 'em in the old 280 with her painted hubcaps...
Just as I'm about to get in her I ask jokingly If they think that Honda can out run this old MB. As I got in I heard them laughing. Then I started the 300+hp 350 up. Funny how they came running over wanted to look under the hood. They said..."no way" when they saw what was there.
I didn't do the conversion. But I couldn't resist when I saw it for sale.
Its alot of fun.
Although I did put a 375HP SBC in a 914 once. Scary fast!

Now I want to put a 617 in a 914. Must be getting old.

Dan
