New (To me) 190D auto trans slip in 1st...
Okay guys, I've done the search, and read many of the posts. Now I'm asking for some ideas. I just bought an '86 190D from a member of this board. I knew the tranny slipped a little when I bought it, but the PO had just recently installed a reman tranny from a reputable shop.
The symptoms are as follows: In first gear, there is a large amount of slipping, especially when trying to accellerate up a hill. It's as if an inexperienced driver is driving with a manual trans. Eventually, the transmission seems to "grab", and then will behave fairly normally. It seems to shift better with light throttle pressure than with heavier pressure. The fluid is full and looks clean. I am thinking of sucking 1 quart out and adding TransX, but this does not seem like the "correct" solution. I am also prepared to adjust the modulator on the side of the tranny and see what happens. I can also disconnect the vacuum line entirely to see if that helps. Can anybody suggest a proper, practical solution to this problem? If the tranny was working properly, this car would be great. SteveM.

My daughter's 190DT had a similar problem with its transmission. It turned out to be the vacuum control module. The part was'nt too expensive but the time spent finding the problem added up.
