My NA '84 300D has taken me to 150 km/h on one country trip. Quiet winding road, sunroof open, Pink Floyd on the CD with the wick cranked up. The old girl gripped the road like ***** on a blanket. Smooth, some pedal left, and still got 10 km/l (28.4 imp MPG)

HIDGolf 02-07-2005 01:50 AM

Not a Benz, but my 02 VW Golf TDI 5 speed will do 114mph with a full load. Weight isnt too much of a factor for top speed, so I like to think the car riding lower allows it to have less lift.

Fastest I have gone was in a German spec 2001 745i (really cool, short wheelbase V8 without a sunroof). I did the math a while ago and it was about 130mph. I lost the nerve to go faster as the car wasnt mine, and I wasnt in Europe.

I had my 300D up to 80 once, after I noticed in my rear view mirror that a Freightliner tractor-trailer was coming alongside me, straddling the lane, and the other lane beside me was full of cars, and I had nowhere else to go but straight, and FAST. That car felt as stable at 80 as it would at 60.

Only 80? I have a hard time keeping my 300D under 85 mph...does yours not have a turbocharger?
Fastest i've taken my 300D Turbo is 95 mph i think...actually i got up to 100mph once but only for about 30 seconds, had to slow due to traffic.

I have a turbo, but you see, I'm not rich like the rest of you speed demons, you all can get speeding tickets and such and brush them off like dust off of your shoulder. Me on the other hand, I like to keep my money. I hardly go above 70 in the city, 75-85 cruising on the open highway. HPD, the Harris County Constable, and the Texas Department of Public safety sure would like to get a hold of some of my bucks for speeding, but nope. :)

Joe your right about the TXDPS and especially they'll pull you over if you look under 20 for sure. Here in Texas if you get out on the Interstate, you had better go 80+ or you'll get run over.

Energie 02-07-2005 09:59 AM

Well, my W201 190D = 112MPH (almost 180 Km/h )
W124 300TDT = 138MPH ( 220.something km/h )
W210 270CDI = 156MPH ( 250 km/h )

all stock.

87.5 mph. ;)

Hatterasguy 02-07-2005 08:58 PM

I just had my SDL up to 90 the other day. I know a nice area where cops can't sit and if traffic alows I like to open her up a bit once in awhile. Speed isn't a big deal for these cars, 100 doesn't feel any different then 60. Things just move faster, not to mention the huge potential fines.

Try hitting your brakes hard at 90 holy crap those things work good! The brakes on these cars always impress me, W126's have big heavy rotors up front that can take a lot of heat. Also they stop better once you get some heat in them.

Ara T. 02-07-2005 09:12 PM

Yeah, when i drove my mom's 300sdl i was very impressed with the brakes. I also liked how the hood was higher up, or at least seemed like it than my w123. My 300D actually seems way peppier though, after my alda adjustment.

Brian Carlton 02-07-2005 10:24 PM

now where the hell is that telephone number.............

...........for the Milford Police. Damn, never can find...........somewhere over here is...................number for......................ahhh, here it is:

203-878-5244.

Yes, have to dial up this number and advise on one dark blue, 300SDL going way over the limit in their jurisdiction. :D

narwhal 02-07-2005 11:49 PM

125 mph on speedo--then I chickened out and slowed down.

Hatterasguy 02-08-2005 11:10 AM

Oh 90 is nothing, back in highschool one of my friends had a Vette... I won't go any further. :D

The Milford cops would love to write a ticket for 90 considering the speed limit is 55 in that area. Thats why I drive slow 99% of the time the cops are Nazis and will nail you for going a little over. But the mileage at 65 is great :D

Brian I may have to grad a brick and take a ride up to NY... :D Your glass coverage it currant right? :D

Buried the 85mph speedo in the current diesel no problem. Don't have a tach so I am in the dark afer 85.

Had my old 116 300SD up to about 90.

never had enough room to bury the SE's speedo. Had 120 before running out of road.

Sash 12-25-2006 08:13 PM

I just have my 84 300sd 105MPH weary easy and smooth, she did live a black trail of smoke behind to :D

I drive thru Maryland on a fairly regular basis.....at least it dosen't say "Still 55", like it used to......speed limit is 70 on Interstates, here in WV......

BUT.....all unmarked roads in WV are limited to 55......and most of those are dangerous at 40 Mph.....

I have seen 95 Mph in this 300D......

How fast have you been in a boat?? I have been to 108 mph (GPS speed) in a Fountain Catamaran......and 85 mph in a Bass Boat also GPS speed....:D

greasybenz 12-26-2006 11:15 AM

this is what ive done so far, ive actually done 115mph on 280 but didnt have a camera to snap a pic of it. This pic was snapped on the way to sacramento, engine had alot more to give but cars up ahead slowed me down:(

to the mid '80s when I worked for Chris*Craft Marine in Sarasota. Got a ride in a race Catamaran that we were modifying to be chase intercepters for the D.E.A. Nothing at the time could out run them in off shore water, always north of 100 mph.

Hatterasguy 12-26-2006 02:30 PM

Not so fast about 70 or so. Speed on the water doesn't do anything for me. I love flying down a road, but on the water ehh. I don't seek it out like I do on land.

Tick over 110 in the SDL, they start to slow down after that. Next time I am in VT on a nice straight road I'll let her run all the way up, but its going to take awhile. I can see 120 maybe going down hill a bit, or with the speedo slightly off. I think on GPS if someone tried it they would find the top end in the 115-120 range. Doesn't matter how much you pump one either, gearing limits them. Its not like the modern AMG's that are only half way through the gears at 120mph.:D

On a side note the W126 itself is more than capable of such speeds. Figure they were good to about 160 in full Euro glory, maybe more in full AMG trim.

speeding in a diesel

4 years ago I had my 1985 300SD doing 115 on I-16 in Georgia, got popped by State Trooper. Cost me $1250.00. That was a learning experience. Never again.

PanzerSD 12-26-2006 05:07 PM

I've had mine up to 140Kmh (whatever that is in MPH) I'm sure she could go faster if I could find enough flat road and afford the fuel. I have a trip across the praries planned in June I'll let'er buck on that trip, right now, I just need to make it thru the winter.. :D

140km=87.5 mph

redassag00 12-26-2006 05:14 PM

She doesnt like running over 100 MPH, the temperature rises fast once you hit the century mark.

Dubyagee 12-26-2006 05:18 PM

I had my 190D up to 90 and its screamed like a sewing machine running on 440ac.

E320wagon'94 12-26-2006 05:20 PM

90 MPH in the 240, downhill for about 5 miles :).
It really sounds like it's in excrutiating pain at that speed. No tach so I don't know the RPM, but it sounds like it's really close to the redline if not redlining already.

anyone know what is the red line on 84 300sd?

On the Police Interceptors only:

129 with the 3.55 Rear Gears and
133 with the 3.27. (Both are electronically limited)

justinperkins 12-27-2006 11:41 AM

100mph in the 02 TDI, 90mph in the 87TD.

Really? Thats what I suspected, if they can't catch you they can't pull you over!:D

Yup. They're limited to that for Driveshaft vibration reasons mostly. My Marauder, however, has been to 147. (Balanced shaft and Limiter removed))

rrgrassi 12-27-2006 01:42 PM

Had the 85 mph speedo pegged, so no idea how fast. The 05.5 TDI had her to 100, then let off. The TDI wanted to faster. Too many cops patrolling the stretch of I-30 I live by.

We have a state trooper that patrols the company I work for. I asked about how they catch people that have faster cars...

He said, "They may be able to our run my car, but they can't out run my radio." Spike strips also have a way of making someone slow down.

bgkast 12-27-2006 02:11 PM

80 or 85. Stupid 3.69 rear, it sounds pained at those speeds.

pawoSD 12-27-2006 03:51 PM

We've pegged 5200rpm on both SD's pretty easily....so about 112-113mph, maybe faster once for me since I did it on a big down hill stretch, I was flying! :D :D

Our minivan has hit 120 before! (downhill, with a tailwind, but it did it) normally it can just barely creep to 110mph on flat ground...takes forever though, way longer than the diesels.

Monomer 12-27-2006 04:22 PM

90

Turbo's SHOT. It'll take forever to break 100 - far longer than I'm willing to go.

winmutt 12-27-2006 05:42 PM

My 83 4spd NA euro did close to 110 on 14" stock rims. I'm on 16" r55 now and am not sure what the ratio difference is. I'd imagine I can get over the 110 mark now. Unfortunately the only way to find out for sure would involve a radar/laser gun.

Once I get the front end rebuilt I might find a lock track.....

DubMutant 12-28-2006 12:33 AM

fast enough...for now

When I first test drove the car 4 months ago, without any repair work (driveshaft bearing, valves, front end bushings, etc) I had it up to 95 ish. It still had more but I didnt feel like breaking it at that speed, especially with the previous owner in the car...and the front end shaking so violently. The trail of black smoke was awesome. The car hadnt been blown open like that ever, probably as 70 year old women dont drive that fast normally.
That was on 95 North around Medford, Ma. There were lots of cops but lots of other cars going 95, too.

So if there is a limiting final drive at 3.69, what is the solution to better highway speed driving? A longer 4th gear? 3.25 or so or should I start looking for a manual 5 speed? (do they even exist for this car?)

PanzerSD 12-28-2006 02:17 AM

In my 80 SD What ratio am I likely to have? are ring/pinions interchangable between most models?

I would like to achieve a slightly lower crusing RPM. Increase my highway MPG a little.

Sash 01-01-2007 07:13 PM

I was on the highway to day,me wife and daughter in the car (84 300sd)I push her to 105MPH very easy, don't know how much more juice she have but i don't believe much more, that was at ,my be 5 more mph but that is it.
By the way anyone know what is the top speed for this cars?

TheDon 01-01-2007 07:14 PM

I would say 110 downhill with a tailwind.

Scott98 01-01-2007 07:34 PM

120 in my 98 E300 and it still had plenty of power.

JackG 01-01-2007 10:29 PM

100 is the top speed I have reached......car might have done more, but not me......besides, I hear it's bad on the timing chain.....and I like mine just how it is......WORKING:rolleyes:
