What's the fastest you've driven your diesel?

I like to get on the interstate at my house and drive up to the next exit. About a 10 mile trip. Usually no state troopers. I blew her pipes out good today at 4000RPM and speedometer pegged as far as she could go. I haven't been caught . . . yet.

She sure sounds good and rides well. I like to think I am on the autobahn. HA! ;)

dannym 01-07-2005 02:42 PM

You had the speedo pegged at 120mph?

I only get my '84 300SD to do 105mph. Maybe a little more going downhill. :)

Are you driving on a flat road?

Danny

Maybe he has an 85 mph speedo? I've had mine around 105 before. Still had some juice left.

I've driven 150 mph by GPS, car was still accelerating very strongly.

Speedo has 230 km/h in it (143 mph).

They don't even bother arresting you here for that.....they shoot you on the spot....

Been a lot of years since i have gone 150mph......Was racing a porche 911 Carrara then....and beat him .on the highway..I was driving a Chevy Monza Spyder with an LT1 swapped into it.

My Benz cracked 100 once since i bought it....too afraid of getting busted to do it again.

I'm sure he has the same cursed 85 MPH speedo I have. I was at 4600 RPM last month and I ran out of highway before I could really see what she could do.

goldenbear 01-07-2005 03:23 PM

I've had some 10-20 mile stretches between Sac and LA on I-5 where I set the cruise at 105. Fastest I've been is 115mph. Smooth at all speeds...

odie 01-07-2005 04:00 PM

Yeah, max it out!!!!

I wind mine out all the time. Peg that 85 :D

Hatterasguy 01-07-2005 04:35 PM

I have had mine up to 110, I was going for a top speed run but a *%&*)%*)&% Saturn got in the way. You would think that a MB coming up on you going 50+ mph faster with his high beams on would make you not want to cut in front of them.

Be carefull if their is only 1 car on the road with you assume they will do something stupid.

willrev 01-07-2005 04:49 PM

Didn't say what speedometer I had

Yes, I have the dreaded 85MPH spedo. She was pegged hard and still cruising. Is this what they mean by "Italian Tuneup"???

Alan Hamm 01-07-2005 05:06 PM

65 MPH - That's the speed limit

Always. ;)

Hatterasguy 01-07-2005 05:12 PM

He was the only car on the road in the center lane. It was very early in the morning kind of dusky but the sun was getting pretty bright. I had my fog, head, and high beams on because I was going for a 120 run. But people are just stupid, I didn't come close to hitting him but I had to slow right down.

Don't worry I am a very safe driver, I'm the one my friends always want to ride with. :D

1st light position. See my #2 post here.

Alan Hamm 01-07-2005 06:27 PM

Oh and I looked at your photos again. Have you gotten rid of that Green Coolant with the brand new head yet? Had mine done this week even after my MB specialist indy swore that they never have had a problem, even with the alum heads. Still I insisted he make the green gone :sun_smile

Yep. :D

97dieseldriver 01-07-2005 06:34 PM

@ 5500 I do 130mph and that is with the wind and no turbo, 32 psi in the v rated tires and 1/2 fuel. Never drive that since it's dangerous in the States. I rather do 85 for 8 hours with no construction or slow pokes in the left lane

Veloce300DT 01-07-2005 07:13 PM

Goldenbear-

Isnt that stretch between Sacramento and LA a blast to cruise! I mean, the scenery is boring, and theres not much to entertain with, so when you have a friend, and some tunes, and the fast lane ahead of you, it makes for perfect high-speeed cruising... dont usually do more than 100, but the last time I did that trip I made it from LA to Sac in about 5 hours, counting some traffic I hit in Valencia. On the way up a really nice w123 300TD wagon I passed that was struggling over the grapevine caught up with me after the 99 interchange, and caravan'd the rest of the way with me. As long as theres no traffic or fog, its smooth sailing on the 5.

Fastest ive done is about 108, could have gone faster but was paranoid- lots of CHP on the routes I travel. I do tend to go between sf and sac alot, and usually do about 100 in the huge dip between the vallejo rest stop and the next exit, i think its red top road. Then I gotta bring it down.. CHP always staked out at red top road for eastbound traffic.

wolf_walker 01-07-2005 08:21 PM

I have you all beat.

120mph in an 85 Jetta diesel NON-turbo.

Ok, so it was down a mountain, but still..
:)

Ah, the 300D hits 100 easily as it should I guess, 85 is it's sweet spot though.

My old Lincoln with a big block and a 2.50 rear gear would sit at 140mph like it was absolutly nothing. It freaked people out. I never had it clocked any higher than that, but it would still pull a bit before the wind took it's toll...

It also got about 4mpg doing that speed steadily.

ForcedInduction 01-07-2005 08:33 PM

There is a straight stretch of newly paved very rural raod down by Elizabeth, Colorado. 8 miles long with a posted 35MPH speed limit!

Needless to say, I've been to 4,600rpm a few times... :D

dcfan40 01-08-2005 12:06 AM

Hatterasguy where did you run your car?

Hatterasguy,

Where did you run your car? I am from Milford and now live in Hamden, CT. I have a 1983 300D with 223,500 miles and counting. I ran my benz once at 100mph. I know it will do that now. I feel comfortable doing 75-85 for the most part. I have a 2001 SLK320 that I will open up but have only done a 100. I find the Parkway north of Hamden is a good place as well as 84 east of Manchester.

Hatterasguy 01-08-2005 09:39 AM

I ran mine on I-95 south. I dropped the pedal right before the last exit 34 if I remember correctly, this gave me a no cop zone until I got over the bridge.

The bridge over the Housitanic(sp?) is a great spot because you can head south into Stratford and make sure their are no cops. Then get off and jump on the north bound side and go for it.

If you have guts and a V1, I-91 is perfect but their are tons of cops. I have never gone fast on I-91 but it is perfect for it.

Douglas.Sherida 01-08-2005 09:51 AM

I had my 85 300TD-T up to 102-103 mph on the PA turnpike last week. According to the owners manual this is all she is rated for, but I'm sure she could have given me more. I chickened out (can't afford that kind of ticket). I am constantly amazed at how smooth the car is at high speeds, really solid with surprizing pickup from ~75-90.

DslBnz 01-08-2005 10:26 AM

Anything over 100 is too fast. You're asking for trouble.

With the current gearing and IP limitations, I could go 140 + mph on a steep enough hill(really, really steep). The fuel cutoff for me starts to occur at about 130 mph and nearly 5K. Then, it's all about conditions.

Those broken white lines seem to move surrealistically fast at those speeds.

85drtysthbenz 01-09-2005 07:18 PM

on the interstate, my car doesnt even feel right until about 90-95mph...after that, it almost drives itself...the ride is smooth as silk...theres not much else that will erase my worries, other than being in my car on the interstate, with all the windows down, sunroof back, blasting some Doors or Hendrix at 105+mph....second best feeling in the world to me :)

oh yeah, the fastest ive gotten to is 125mph on level ground...downhill, i dont know how fast itll go, the speedo only goes to 125

Doktor Bert 01-09-2005 09:34 PM

Near Bakersfield, California, there is a section of county roadway called "7th Standard Road.

Between Intersate 5 and Main Drain Road (near the California Aquaduct) there is a 4 mile section of beautiful, flat roadway with no curves or intersections. The landscape is desert and visibility is very good.

On this section I have buried the speedometer on my 1969 Dodge Charger R/T (150 mph indicated speed) and 120 indicated on the 1978 300SD.

I would have to calculate the top end performance of the 300SD with a 215/60/14 and 3.07:1 axle, but I think it would be respectable at higher speeds.

The 1979 Trans Am with 400 horsepower on tap has a 3.42:1 axle and 255/60/15 tires. It's capable of around 130 at a conservative 5800 rpm. The 440 Pontiac is capable of 6000.

Anyone have a fast W116???...Bert

oldnavy 01-09-2005 11:30 PM

132 MPH by GPS in wife's Jetta, running 50+ cetane fuel on a cool July morning and 78 MPH by GPS in the old 240D that I sold to a forum member.

Checked the fuel mileage on the Magnum today with 137 miles in town out of 301 miles at fill up and it took 14.5 gallons. I guess 20 MPG for the way I drive is not too bad. That $10,000 saved over buying a diesel VW Passat will only take me 100,000 miles @ $2.00 gallon for RUG, only thing is I'm buying gas (BP) for $1.50 gallon locally. :D

Here is a semi-old video of one such trip. I did not get to the 100mph+ like I wanted.

HERE is that video! :D

Immaculately maintained '84 300 Turbo diesel,bought from the original owner{I was with him when he bought it}

I took possession recently at 209,000 miles,God bless it.

Did the usual neglected correctives, took it into the city and had it up to 93 on the Southern State pkwy, scared the bejasus outa me, 5 days later I had the wheels balanced and replaced the control arm bushings.

No problems after that, except a lingering fear of thrown rods and skipped chains.......knock on{veneered}wood.

I want it to last so I'll keep it @ 60 mph but for short bursts.

Hit Man X 01-11-2005 09:11 PM

Ran my W126 to about 90mph for 3min after I changed the fuel filters on it... I figured it needed to have the smoke blown out of it's chambers a bit. :D

oldsouth 01-11-2005 09:53 PM

The E300D will go 133 before it hits the governor.

DslBnz 01-11-2005 11:06 PM

Here's a W140 with a 606 equipped just passing over the 500K kilometer mark...For the first time. :D

At top speed of course. ;)

That's neat. Why do Europeans get all the power. 177hp is a lot more than 148 from the same engine. 118 mph by the GPS is all mine will do (which is an indicated 121). Hope to have a similiar sequence at 500,000 kilometers but it will be hard to do with our speed limits.

Russmeister 01-12-2005 01:15 AM

I got my OM 617.952 to 90mph. The car felt so stable and safe at that speed. Nothing like the rice rockets my friends all drive. Not planning on doing it any time soon. There is just too much traffic here and the speed limit is 55 in most places.

Benster Tom 01-12-2005 01:18 AM

90mph easy, but I haven't pushed it past that...yet. :D

Ara T. 01-12-2005 01:54 AM

90 on the 300D, i think it had a little more in it :D It did feel safe at that speed, but fog rolled in and I didn't want to take any chances.

dlssmith 01-12-2005 01:18 PM

Before adjusting the alda she would do 93mph down hill with a tail wind. Now it's up to about 107 or 108. Fast enough for my taste, but smooth as can be. It really doesn't seem to be rapping the engine out though. It feels as if she would go quite a lot faster if there was more fuel available or if the exhaust wasn't so restricted. I think the car needs a larger strait pipe exhaust, no muffler, and she would really go.

wagger 01-12-2005 02:25 PM

140 for me, on private road of course!!!! early one sunday morning.

zbenz 01-12-2005 08:19 PM

fast faster and omg fast

85 120, 87 140 with pedal left, 82 chevette 102     and the 83 162 on the track and I was the limiting factor :D

stevelewis 01-12-2005 08:27 PM

495 south at night, 108 for about 15 seconds, I think there is more but fast enough for me steve 83sd

I think a 87 300D in good tune should top out at 125-130.

Brent Laatsch 01-12-2005 09:56 PM

Whats the fastest?

The dreaded 85 mph speedo also. The friends 84 camaro said I was pushing 109. He was next to me last summer on I 70 west of Columbus, Oh.

I got to 139 mph once in the '87, but that was a fluke and a half. I don't believe myself or my car's speedometer.

Absolutely. Top speed should be about 130 mph. Something is not right here.

VeeDubTDI 01-13-2005 01:38 AM

I had the SDL up to 115 for about a mile. It could have done more if I had more road. With the straight pipe I maintained 105 uphill. There seems to be more power available at higher engine speeds now. :)

I had the Beetle up to an indicated 134 (about 132 actual) in the mountains. That was pretty much topped out.

kmaysob 01-19-2005 02:26 AM

i just got my new sd to do 115mph tonight. i think i could have gotten to 120 if i had more strait road and if i had my tires off my old one on it. i was afraid to stay on it for fear that i may seperate a tire(cheap goodyears)

redbaronph123 01-19-2005 04:22 AM

you guys have all the fun  (wishing i had a turbo diesel... eheheh)

fastest i got in my wagon is 140KPH... didnt feel like pusing it anymore...but i'd bet it can still give some more KPHs...
