Still Hard Start

1983 300SD. Still have a hard time finding out what is wrong. Car need to be primed with the hand pump before it will start in the morning. After that it is good to go all day as long as there isn't a few hours between starts.

I left the fuel cap ff for the last two days to see if the vent was not working but it did not change anything. The fuel filters are fairly new but I will change them out today again.

It seems like air is getting in somewhere. Any other suggestions?

does the primer pump leak fuel when you pump it? i'm guessing that it hasn't been changed to the 'new' style?

Thanks for responding. I installed a new style one last year and it does not seem to be leaking. I just changed both of the filters. I will see how that does.

How is the starter turning the engine over? It is feasible you have a number of weak components and your symptoms are not pointing to anything clearly. If you have no leaks where fuel is coming out, weeping or squirting, I would begin to find the idea of a small air leak into the system that only makes a difference after several hours of cooldown harder to point to as your problem. At the age of these cars they almost all leak some air into the system, and most still start. It takes a moment of cranking though. If your starter is too weak to crank the engine over for a few seconds before it slows down and cannot support firing off without the help of an operating temperature or near operating temperature block, you might conclude the fuel system is the culprit. Pumping up the fuel system may make the task easier, but may only serve to hide the real problem or send you off to fix something that is a peripheral contributor to the behavior you see and which is displeasing you.

My 1982 240D used to display a number of problems and became very hard to start. New engine mounts and a new starter (FastLane Bosch unit for a late 300D Turbodiesel) made the engine immune to the previous starting headaches. My daughter subsequently had the injection timing checked by a local independent repair shop in Albany, NY, and they never reassembled the number one injector check valve assembly onto the pump correctly (three tries and I gave up and did it myself) leading to a substantial leak. That, along with the jumpers from injector to injector, and a leaky hand pump assemly, never prevented the engine from jumping to life with good glow plugs, oil, and fuel in the tank, once the starter was operating as intended.

Good luck, Jim
