oil consumption 1993 300sd

hello all...

was just wondering what is considered normal oil consumption for a 1993 300sd with the original motor...i am burning about 1 qt. per 700 miles...when speaking to my mercedes mechanic he told me that mercedes factory gives a range of 1 qt per 500-1000 miles...

any info or opinions please..
