Can I take my diesel out for drive with summer fuel.

I have a ‘94 Suburban diesel 4x4 that I pretty much stopped driving when the price of fuel shot up last fall. I mostly only used it for towing once or twice a month anyway and for playing in the snow when I get the opportunity. I filled it up in September (about 38 gallons total) and it still is over 3/4 full. At night it’s been going down in the mid teens and during the day it’s supposed to get into the low to mid 20’s. We are expecting 5 to 7 inches of snow so I was hoping to go out and play with it but I understand non-winterized diesel will cloud up and block the filter at around 20 degrees. I guess I could put some additive in the tank to lower that temperature but I’m not sure it would fully mix with the fuel already there not to mention the fuel in the lines. Is it safe to take it out like that in this weather?

Add some Diesel additive that prevents gelling, and disperses moisture. Drive it around and use up as much of the current fuel that you can.

Just before heading back home, fill-it-up with Winter Blend Diesel, and add more of the same additive.

You should be OK.

If the fuel has already gelled, putting in the additive isn't going to do much.

You need to start it and see if it will idle. Run it for about 15 minutes. If it does not stall, you can have some confidence in the fuel.

The additive would be beneficial at this point to prevent additional problems if the temperature drops further.
