Finally did my purge
After having to creep up hills at 35-40 mph and not having any top end, today was the day I finally had the time to do a purge (my first one ever) and fuel filter replacement.
I was actually surprised at how easy the purge was. After following the directions that many have placed in these pages recently, it was a breeze. The only thing that I didn't read and found out the hard way.....put a breather hole in the cap of your bottle/jar if you have a very tight fit around the hoses...I had to do this mid purge while the plastic bottle started caving in on itself. Another thing....don't use equal lengths of hose for feed and return....make the feed hose longer than the return hose so you can put the bottle up higher. Finally, I was surprised at the amount of junk that came out of my large secondary filter. This filter is only about 4 months old, but it's got huge amounts of small black flecks floating in it. Less than ten minutes after doing the purge, I already had a lot of black flecks in my primary filter. It sure felt good to jump on the Interstate, punch it and be up to 4500 RPM and nearly 80 mph in just a couple of seconds.... Next step, replace two bad 3/2 valves!

I'd assume this probably has never been done on your vehicle before...
How many miles are on your SD and it's injectors?

Currently at 261,000 miles. I'm not sure if the injectors are Original or not. I have a ton of receipts going back years, but none for Injectors.
I'm thinking that I may have to have my tank removed and steam blasted to get whatever gunk is in there out....sorta start over fresh..... I bount the car in April last year with 243,000 miles on it, have done 3 fuel filter changes, a couple of vacuum hoses, a valve adjust with the help of R Leo (who did most of the work because I seemed to be all thumbs, Thanks Again Randy ! !) and oil changes. Some minor maintenance issues, but that's about it. Now I really need an alignment BAD......my front tires....which I put on in June....are worn out on the inside 2 inches of the tire.....gotta find me someone soon.....

Cool deal. I'm just putting mine back together on the physical side of things... motor/trans are in great shape. Valves were adjusted before I got it and the chain is in good shap. Tho' for piece of mind I'd like to change it... or at least the tensioner here around 250K.
My tank was leaking (don't have a clue how) but it seems VERY easy to R&R... maybe 90min at the most. If you opt to do this, I'd be interested to know what sort of poo comes out of there...

taking the tank out
of the 240 was a breeze. it was cleaned with a few qts of iso propal alchohol. i just stood there and provided the shaking and turning to get the alk around the tank. i did this 3 times and lots of stuff came out. the only thing not done was the fuel strainer as we did not have a replacement gasket(it arrived two days later). in between rinses it was blown out with compressed air to dry the tank.

Fuzzball, I took my 240 tank out and cleaned it with a power washer.. took it to the car wash in the pickup truck... but was pleased that it was very clean looking inside anyway... and I had had several ' bouts' with algae over the past year.
It was easy to take out.. but harder to get back in (alone).. mainly because of the thick bottom gasket/preloaded rubber holder at the bottom... and when I looked at it I decided that in the future on 123 sedans I would do the job with it IN the car... the holes are large and in great places to do this and get a great cleanout... I don't know about your model car... But if you want to come out here you can be the first one to try it.. worst case? you still have to take it out... best case... you get it cleaned but don't have the extra work.. ( wear your work clothes... I have be promoted to supervisor ) LOL Hollar at me... Greg |

Filter:
Fuzz, don't forget you have a filter in the tank. If you have that much black {algie} you need the Bio to Kill iT and then start with new filters.
And anyone that say's back wash filters, they are blowning smoke. Change them and carry spare. Wrong place to save money. Charlie |
