You will need to read the manual to do that correctly. Search for ' skinnerbox' and find the online one if you don't own one.. but paper manuals are great for taking out to the work area....
The MB FSM is very specific about procedure... the order in which the bolts are to be tightened.. the increment... a little at a time... the need for clean threads, lightly lubricated, the types of bolts, how to measure some of them to see if they can be used again, the ' rest time' near the end of the procedure , and then the part where you turn the bolt an extra specified number of degrees ignoring the torque readings ( in fact not using a torque wrench at that point). All written out so you can get the head gasket and stuff to last a long time. Note also that some types of head gaskets are supposed to remain sealed until minutes before being set on the head and torqued down... all in the manual .... |

I was wondering if this was going to turn into another "Which torque wrench is the best".
Or a torque vs. degrees of rotation discussion. Danny

I never did figure out how the concept of " VS." got into that discussion... since the manual specifies taking the bolts to a certain torque range and then using the 90 degree additional turn twice ( after resting the bolt ). In other words the manual requires both... not choosing between them.

What specificly are you looking for? Since you have the 617 engine in your car, you could buy a Haynes manual for the W123 series diesels 4 cyl and 5 cyl engines. It has specs on complete engine tear downs and torque specs for eveything. Even for simple things like transmission pan bolts and drain plugs.
