good news--windshield for $195

I was pretty bummed last week when my windshield developed a long crack (driver's side, of course) after being hit by some c*** that flew off the back of a pick-up truck. I don't carry comprehensive insurance (the one that pays for glass) to save money. I got a quote today for a new replacement windshield with lifetime warranty from safelite for $195. This is about the same as one year of comprehensive insurance. I plan on having it done today and will let you all know how it looks.

FYI, the last time I had a windshield replaced on a 123, I had comp. coverage so I had the work done by the local stealer. I saw the invoice, and it was over $600!

So one year of comprehensive costs you around 200? I pay that for six mths of liability, Geico. Hmmm.

I pay 3/4 of that for a YEARS worth of liability. Farm Bureau.

None- I think I'm just paying too much that's all. Need to shop around. I'm 32 and unmarried and live in DC, go figure.

Nothing to report so far on the quality of the windshield, because Safelite didn't show up yesterday. They didn't call me either. Sort of reminds me of the service policy of our local cable company. They say they will come sometime between 12 and 5 and then don't show up at all.

Maybe they will install it today. I guess that for the price I can deal with the low service level.

Are you going with the people who come to you and install it in your driveway?

If so, I would strongly discourage this at the typical temperatures that you face in MN.

I do recall an article that was severely critical of the practice of installation in cold temperatures.

I share the concern. Fortunately, it is parked in a heated garage today

I just had a windshield replaced by Safelite in one of my Volkswagen's and I was very happy...And it was fairly cheap...Their deal is they make all their own windshields. don't expect OEM with them...

Back when I accidentally shattered the passenger window on my SD.... I got quotes from the Stealership....a local guy, and Auto Glass Specialists, Dealer wanted like $500 something, Local guy over $600!! and AGS wanted $128!!!!! 128!! They came to my driveway, installed the window (which they had in a warehouse right here in gr!!!) and cleaned up. For $128 that was pretty amazing. AGS = recommended.

They came and installed it this afternoon, using the original seal (which they said is far better than any replacement). The glass is crystal clear and my vision on the way home tonight was greatly improved. Very happy, so far. I guess the next test will be to see how it does in the rain.

The installer told me that to install a new windshield in a 123 no adhesive is used, just the rubber seal.

They reused a 20 year old seal? I hope it doesn't leak.

That the old one is better stuff is bs. You can still buy that exact same seal just softer and in better shape.

With the W126's their is no gasket just sealant.

New Windsheilds are nice though arn't they? Mine was just done too, so clear.
