I have seen several 380SL's with LSD's over the years working at the dealer....I have also seen a bunch of things that people say isn't possible or was never produced....like a LHD 280SL with a M110 engine and a 5 speed gearbox, but I drove/serviced this car regularly. I have also seen MBZ cars in the UAE that I have never seen anywhere else in the world; Benz's that most people would say simply do not exist....but they do.

I can also tell you we routinely serviced a Red Euro 380SL that belonged to a Chiropractor in Fresno. This 380 would frequently beat 560SL's from a standing start and from a 80 mph roll. We all thought the engine must have been at least a 4.5, but one day it jumped the chain and bent the valves. I did both heads and the chains, upgrading it to a double chain while I was in there.

Low and behold....it was just a 3.8 litre....

Another satisfied customer here, I had a 2.47 installed on my SD prior to my big trip east to Austin from LA however I do have a problem that doesn't seem to have been covered.

Looking at the 8 pin connector on the back of my new and old speedometers, the pin pattern has different ones missing. I don't know if this is the issue or not, but the cluster lights do not work. Does the 8 pin connector impact the lights or is that strictly for the operation of the speedometer?

I bought my 300sd with a 2.47 rear end already in it (it's a former 380se) and it was one of the reasons I bought it. Its wonderfully silent when cursing and has more than ample power.

Well, that's always a good thing.

I used a GPS unit to calculate miles driven and the fill-ups had visible fuel right up to the filler opening both when I initially filled up and when I filled up today. The best I did before the diff swap was 27.2 mpg and that was with a little more highway driving as a percentage. Generally, my car gets 26 on every tank no matter what I do and I'm excited that the diff swap is looking like it will have efficiency advantages as well as noise benefits. I will report my next tank's mpg when the next 500 miles goes by. It is possible that this tank was a fluke so more testing is needed.

In further attempts at noise reduction, I put glycerin on my door seals today to try to get rid of the creaky sound they make and it made a big difference. We'll see if it lasts. I read about using glycerin on door seals in some owners manual but I can't remember where. So far, it seems to work and the car is quiter still.

Interesting about the glycerin in the door seals, I am going to try that. I always assumed those little squeaks were coming from elsewhere in the interior.

I am currently researching options for a 3.07 diff in a 300SEL, and your post was quite informative.
