If you do not have a U joint for your socket set, get one. Ditto for various sizes of extensions. I took the crossover pipe off to get to the middle ones. I think there is one easy one, maybe two. The rest can be done, they may take 10 minutes apiece. You can snake a tool in to get to all of them without taking anything except the crossover off.

I think I need better access. The #1 plug will loosen but won't come out. I need to get my hands in there and maybe some penetrating oil. Also need to get a reamer for the threads. I assume I will need to take off the intake manifold for the access I need but could use some guidance (and moral support) from the faithful here. Don't want to screw it up.

Thanks,

Joe

The first maintenance I ever did on my SDL was to replace the glowplugs. I went ahead and took the intake off, as I tend to end up breaking things when I get frustrated working in tight areas. I can't say removing the intake is all that much fun, but it wasn't terrible either. It is pretty straight-forward, just be careful not to round out the bolts. Gives you a good chance to clean out all the oily junk in it and see why you should block off your egr.
