'81 300D Transmission problem, flare 2-3

I am having transmission shift problems --- soft (flaring) 2-3 shift, late shift 2-3 (high RPM), and harsh 1-2, 3-4 shift. This is after I checked/repaired vacuum system and have proper vacuum to modulator e.g. approx 0-15 " from full to no throttle. I also cranked up the modulator pressure to virtually eliminate flare, but this made the other problems more pronounced, and 2-3 is still very soft .

I have read many discussions reguarding a Bowden cable and it's adjustment. The only problem is I can't seem to find one on my car ! I have found in the ATSG book for 722.1-722.2 transmission a note buried on pg. 106 that says "Important Note: 1980-1983 300D and 240D with a vacuum modulator have NO TV LINKAGE".

Does this mean there is no bowden cable on this transmission?

Is K1 just taking too long to engage?

Is it clutch pack wear, or leaking?

Is there anything I can measure before tearing this thing out of the car?

If I need to rebuild or replace this transmission, is it possible to put a newer 5sp version in (the car is none too quick and rev's pretty high at 75mph so I'm thinking a 5sp might be a help ).

David

P.S. Why the hell is diesel so much more expensive than gasoline (in California it's as much as premium gasoline $2.40/gallon?! I thought less refining meant it would be cheaper !

Sounds like you need the K1 Spring Kit. Check out the links I posted.

Try a search for Trans-x .... you did not say how what kind of fluid maintenance your trans has had.... and on old cars you may not know...
so if your problems are from varnish build up this may help... at least it eliminates the cheapest to fix part of the potential problems....

I'm not sure if this article applies to 722.1XX and 722.2XX transmissions. The 722.118 seems to be strange beast with no bowden cable.

I also have been dealing with a 2-3 flare on the 722.118 trans. The best I have been able to do is find a somewhat acceptable compromise. Basically I turned the vacuum modulator as high as needed to minimize 2-3 flare then increased the vacuum at vacuum control valve to soften the 1-2 shifting somewhat. I'm at around 95 psi pressure at idle and with the vacuum control lever spaced 10mm from the pin I am set at 11" of vacuum. This gives a firm shift at 1-2 but minimum flare at 2-3. I guess I will try some Trans-X snake oil at some point and see what happens.

Snake oils only work if you believe in them.... so don't waste your money.
