Got pulled over for excessive smoke

Sigh......

I took the steel wheels and hubcaps off my parts car and installed them on the wagon this afternoon. Since the parts car sat in place for 2 years I wanted to see if the tires would be out of balance or some-such. Well, I only drive the wagon after dark these days due to the rediculous amount of smoke it produces. (And it is tremendous! )
Well, I turned off the highway onto the main road through our fair town. I knew I was in trouble when the Sheriff pulled out of the gas station just as I passed. Bad timing!
He let me go for about half a mile, past the first stop sign. As I started to pull away from the second stop here came the lights. I turned the car off as I rolled to a stop. After a couple of minutes they got out and walked up to the window. I offered a pre-emptive strike and apologized for them having to fight through the smoke. He said they pulled me over to ask about my emissions problems. Then, and this was funny to watch, they both at the same time moved their flashlights to my inspection and registration stickers on the windshield. The look of shock on both of their faces to see that both were current was amusing. I told them I was fighting through smoke issues and was out on an afterdark testdrive. They said goodluck and bid me farewell.
I have such contempt for this car...

Ouch; how are you injectors, IP and compression? Rebuild your injectors, IP and if your compression is strong it shouldn't smoke. Although if it is burning a lot of oil, turbo and valve seals should be suspect.

Since it is a 617 I am assuming your valves are adjusted and you checked the timing chain while you were at it.

How's the condition of the body and interior? Any rust issues?

Most cops are pretty cool if you treat them right.

No real rust to speak of. No real paint to speak of either. The driver side front quarter panel has rust spot, but that's about it. Interior is clean except for cracked dash. Interior is blue, driver seat is black. Suspension is fine, SLS is working well. Engine bay is pretty clean, not rusty and oxidized.
In other words, except for the smoke, missing and slower than automatic 240D acceleration the car is fine.

Jimmy,
Don't listen to Bill; he's just a vulture circling over the roadkill. You need to keep that smoker because it will come in handy when the skeeters get bad. That's what I'm gonna do.

Jimmy, the local diesel shop here charged me $4 per injector to fully test for pop and spray pattern. Between that, adjusting or just checking the valves and timing the IP, your chances of fixing that smoke are excellent. Just the IP timing can make the most amazing smoke. Boy, do I know

I don't know enough to keep from making a bad purchase (obviously), but I now know enough not to make a bad sales decision.
Had 3 bad injectors last summer when this started, and had them all rebuilt. The smoke is the same, but the overpowering diesel smell is gone. Haven't done IP timing or checked for chain elongation. I'll need help with those the first time. Power is way way down also. Takes the better part of a minute to get up to 60.
I don't ever blame anyone for seeking a good deal. If someone sacks up and asks, no problem. Just sack up yourself and say "NO".
Bill, were I to sell it to you, not that you really asked, I would require the car to be titled by name, not by vin #.

I had an old Peugeot diesel that smoked pretty good when it was cold but cleared up when it got warm. I got pulled over and given a fix-it ticket when it was cold even though I explained it. I let it idle and warm up while the cop wrote the ticket. When he was done drove the couple of miles with my warmed-up and now smokeless diesel to the DMV and took care of it. The inspector did observe that the ink was still wet on the ticket.

Describe this smoke problem -- there are a couple causes that have easy fixes!
