Primer Pump

I used diesel purge for the first time yesterday... it went all right, but after changing the filters I need to prime the fuel system because the engine won't start; after cranking for 10seconds or so it will almost get there, but I guess there is air in the fuel system. Somebody confirm if this is the procedure for getting the air out of the fuel lines:

1.) Loosen bolt holding main filter a bit.

2.) Pump handle until air bubbles stop coming out from under the bolt?

I pump the primer (white, donut style) but all it does is spit diesel out everywhere. I searched and evidently i need a new primer pump. Can i purge air from the system with this faulty pump unit or do I need to order a new pump before I can start the engine?

It depends on how faulty the old pump is. The fact that it leaks does not mean that all is lost. The 617 service manual says to bleed air from the filter by loosening the union screw on the filter housing where the fuel line goes from the filter to the IP. Operate the pump until all air is expelled from the filter, then tighten the union screw. Continue to operate the pump until you hear the relief valve on the IP operate. (The relief valve will make a squirting sort of sound as you operate the pump.) Then secure the pump.
I typically find that the car is a bit slow to start evan after following this procedure.

It could, depending on how well your pump works. In any case, a new pump would be a good idea before your old one leaves you "high & dry."

Your going to have that pump sucking air at heavy loads and high speeds causing a loss of power....if it leaks it can suck air too. Good idea to replace it at earliest opportune time.

Will do... i saw the primer pump at fastlane for $16 i think, and the primer pump assembly for $200 somethin, do i need both? Hope not. Anyways, thanks Tango for clearing up the confusion, i pumped all the air out and the engine starts right up just like she used to, idles a bit quieter and smoother too, and i noticed a bit more higher end power. Good stuff!
