Rear end ID help
HI
On my in going 220d engine swap ( 617A + five speed) Rehash I have two 1969 @@)'s one had the 617 in it I am putting the engin in another 1969 220D . The rear ends ate totaly different . the "hot rod" has an aluminum (?) housing with cooling fins (?) the new one has a steel housing I looked at a 300D turbo 80's it had a steel rear - so how do I tell which one I have and next the ratio . Thanks Chuck PS the engine is in the core suport is ready to be welded back in ( I had to change them because the 671 has an oil cooler. Sub frame's are swaped fenders are off waiting the front core work. Trans should go in next week . Lots of small things to change like start ? pull swich- the new one is vacume /electric and really burried in dash. shifter needs to be modified to fit larger hole. re mount the water/air intercooler ( I have no idea why but it looks cool) ( sorry for the pun) |

Gear ratio is usually stamped onto the back of the housing at the bottom right when viewed from the rear. Usually have to clean it off to see it. My SDL is 2.88 and my old SEL was 2.47. Have to remember these cars generally use a direct drive top gear so they will have higher gearing than an American car.
