intermittent idle problem (300SDL)

I guess I've just been having all these intermittent problems with the SDL, anyways, sometimes when coming to a stop after normal driving conditions the idle will hover around 1000 rpms. If it happens while stopped at a traffic light then I put it in neutral and rev it up to 2k or so and then let off and the idle drops to 700 where it usually is. Obviously this isn't a major problem but something I'd like to take care of none the less. Any insight is of course appreciated.

Thanks
David

Linkage not returning fully?

Easy stuff first? Perhaps the throttle linkage is sticking a little. To prove just open hood and try closing the linkage by hand the next time it sticks at 1000 rpm. Maybe you already have tried this?

Mine does that and I am pretty sure Brians does as well. Just another 603 quark I guess. I always thought it was IP related, an IP rebuild would probably make it go away.

I have had that happen too. I leave it in gear, and the rpm fall off by themselves in a short while. I figure it's the Electronic Diesel System that pulled the rack out a bit when stone cold, and forgot to put it back. It's intermittent, like yours, too.

I sometimes lose the idle control completely. Tach drops to zero, idle drops to mechanical low idle around 500 rpm. Next time engine speed exceeds 1,000 rpm the tach comes back and the idle is OK. This comes and goes too, in warmer weather. Haven't chased that gremlin down yet.

Best Regards,
Jim

So I'm not the only one then. Like all of you can tell then it's nothing serious obviously.

Thanks
David

P.S.
made it back from NC with no problems, well, minor warming up problems which I will expand upon another time when I have more time.

Me too!

Mine started doing this out of the blue about a year ago.

I never shift out of drive.. sometimes it just slowly drops from 1000 to ~700RPM, and other times I'm already accelerating (short traffic light or stop sign) before anything fixes itself.

My mechanic told me to check and lubricate the linkage. Which I've done numerous times (with ATF). Doesn't seem to help.

One thing I've heard (but not yet investigated) on my car, is that bad motor mounts can cause this. The engine can shift itself (due to the bad mounts) which will put strain on the linkage and cause the engine to idle high.

Has anyone had this problem even though they have relatively new motor mounts installed? That would narrow down if the motor mounts are related!

I run Diesel Purge once a year, lubricate the linkage 3-4 times a year, and have been doing so for the last 4 years. For some reason, this problem just "appeared" one day about a year ago.. not sure what caused it!

Neal
