I can't wait for my CV boots to fail, so I have an excuse to re-do the rear end with a 2.47

OK..so you put a 2.46 differential into the W123.........what do you do to get a speedo to read correctly........for those of us that care about such things.

What differential did the 90-93 300D 2.5 Turbos come with? I haven't looked into it but was always wondering...
At 120km/h I read about 2700 rpm (of course it depends on the 4th gear ratio too).. but I can downshift no problem on the highway, and it will shift back up into 4th around 135 km/h.

BHD,
About a month ago, I put a 2.46 into my 300SD. Yesterday, I put a speedometer from a 380SE into my 300SD. Problem solved. No more computations while I am driving the sweetest riding diesel in the world. ![]() Tom

Interesting! I have a nice 380SE with a bad case of "the cams" and a good 617 drivetrain in a worn 300SD.
May just stick the 617 in the SE chassis. Save me the trouble of that difficult speedo swap. |

![]() I am also interested in the W123 swap. I think I have access to the parts. Sounds like you have to swap the flange where the flex plate bolts up and the shims where the axles fit. Then it would just be a wrestling match. Not sure about driveshaft length. |

Holy resurected thread batman,
The yolk can be swapped off the tranny or the diff, yes its bolt on, you need a 30mm 12 point long shaft socket, (not the most common item). The stock axels should work just fine. I also had a longbody W126 with a 617 turbo, and a 2.47 rear and it was great, averaged 28 MPG over 60K miles, got as high as 31 mpg on some tanks. AFAIK there is no W123 speedo that will work correctly with the 2.47 diff.

I'd like to see before and after 0-60 runs to see whats lost.
If its under a second its probably worth the trade off, more than that ehhh not so sure.
