Nice keychain. I have a similar keychain, although it has the MB logo, with the traditional blue border and laurel surrounding the logo. On the back, it says "Mercedes-Benz Visitor Center, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama."

Compress ignite has a point. In my years in the garage business I replaced a few ignition switches usually on vans owned by contractors who always had a big wad of keys hanging from the ignition. The extra weight wore out the switch.

Now I keep all my car keys on their own key ring, no more than 2 keys to a ring.

Of course this only happens after many miles, usually over 100,000. So if you are not going to keep your Benz that long or you don't care if the key wears out and your car won't start one day, don't worry about it.

Starting isn't the issue; it's no problem to hotwire and get a diesel running. The big issue is that the steering column won't unlock!! You may as well be anchored if that steering column won't turn.

See here:

Locked column tale of woe.

My 82 and 87 have new tumblers. The 87 has a new steering lock as well.

BRING IT ON!

How did the tumbler replacement go on your 82? I need to do that as well and wondered if you had any issue along the way. I'm planning to use a paperclip to get the old one out.

By the way here's my cool keychain-

all said and done in under 5 minutes, pretty easy. a LOT easier than replacing a jammed up steering lock on the 124
