350SD Valve Setting

Grand Father just bought a 1991 350SD with 125,000 miles. Wants to know the intake and exhaust valve settings. Would like to purchase a Shop Manual for this vehicle. Where could he find one.

Welcome to the forum.
The 350 with the 603 engine has Hydraulic Valve lifters that should not need adjustment. Sometimes they wear and need replacement (not that expensive to buy but a pain to install). If you have a noisy valvetrain, try using Mobil-1 15W-50 or another good Diesel rated synthetic as this quite often quiets them down after 100 miles or so.

Paper manuals are very hard to get although they do come up on e-bay every so often. CD-based Manuals are available from M-B dealers or (copies) on e-bay.

Smile "Should not need adjusting"

Thanks for the quick reply. He just got the car, albiet before I learned about the possible rod bending issues that these engines could be prone too. He's a die hard diesel man with numerous isuzu trucks under his belt.
When you said the valves should not need adjusting, is there a factory spec setting?
Unfortunatly he's from the old school and cant get into the cyber age but loves the info out here. I dont mind helping out though..

No specs on the valves, they are a zero clearance hydraulic tappet design with the tappet between the cam and valve. Non serviceable except for replacing the tappets, and I've never heard of any problems other than dead tappets. No adjustments possible.

They rattle pretty badly if the tappets are bad, but a run of synthetic oil often cures that, along with replacing the two small o-rings on the center shaft in the oil filter housing cover. Else replace tappets and inspect cam.

If it hasn't bent the rods by now, chances are it won't, ever. Bad mojo if it does, though....

Change oil and filter every 6000 miles and use synthetic oil, should run forever. You will need to remove the crossover pipe between turbo and intake to check for soot/coke accumulation. This is only a problem if dino oil has been used, synthetic doesn't coke.

My 300D slowly leaks about a quart in 5000 miles, doesn't appear to burn it.

Peter
