oil capacity

I have a question on 240D oil capacity. I recently changed the oil and filter, and no way does it hold 7 quarts of oil. Is there something special you have to do changing the oil?

I was thinking that mine held 6.5 or so. Can't quite remember as its been awhile since I've had a 240D. Did you start the engine and let the oil circulate through the filter, etc?

That sounds about right. MB diesels hold quite a bit of oil. I put in nearly 8 qts in my 300D.

Did you drain the oil cooler?

The oil cooler will hold nearly a quart. Also, you aren't contaminating that fresh new oil with a quart of old.

oil capacity

I had the car pretty warm when I changed it. I, also, changed the oil filter. I didn't think there was a drain plug on the bottom of it...so I put in the new filter and added the oil. Every other car I've owned has been right by the book on capacity. I was curious about this so thought I would run it by you.

Without draining the oil cooler, I refill with 6.75 US quarts on my 4 cyl 240D, I think the 5 cyl 300s use more.

oil cooler

i don't think any of my 123 240s had a drain plug on the oil cooler. my 74 116 did though.

You suggested draining the oil cooler. I was curious how do you do that? Really wasn't aware of an oil cooler on the car.

If there is an oil cooler it will be to the right of the radiator (driver's side). Not really sure if that is such a good idea though, as each time you do the draining, you will have to loosen the hose connection. That runs the risk of ruining the threads of the fitting welded into the cooler and the coolers are not growing on trees.

My Euro 240D does not have an oil cooler.
Capacity is about 6 quarts.

That's what I came up with when I changed the oil and filter after purchasing the car was 6 quarts. It didn't agree with the owners manual so I double checked again to make sure I was referencing the right info and came up with the same thing again.

What year is your 240D? If it's before 1977 it won't have an oil cooler.

If Mercedes wanted you to drain the oil cooler, they would have made a drain plug there. don't mess with mother nature.
