We have friends with a 2002 E320 4Matic. They are very impressed with it, and their previous car was a 1999 Audi A6 Quattro. (To refute the article linked, the owners say the MB is far better in every regard except for the AWD system.) There are a few caveats: 1, this car was built to a cost standard and not a quality standard. It has a SOHC 3.2L V6 motor with 3 valves / cylinder. This engine was designed for and built in America for the ML SUV's. Many people like the engine, others say the previous 3.2L m104 inline 6 DOHC 24V unit was better in terms of performance and longevity. I have also heard that while the new V6 offers excellent all around power, the old engine performed better at high speeds. Some people say the build quality suffered in the w210 series you are interested in, but from what I have seen it makes the older w124 cars seem very spartan. Make sure the engine does not have an FSS / oil change issue. Also, the harmonic balancer was recalled on most of these cars. Hopefully, others can offer more detailed info on this car.

Thx Troverman. Does that DOHC motor come in any year model of that series wagon? After posting, I searched the net and came across the pulley problem. Will keep searching.

As you may know, Mercedes discontinued the wagon after 1995, the last year of the w124 chassis. The wagon was re-introduced in 1998, on the w210 chassis. The 210 came out in 1996 as a sedan, and had the m104 (DOHC) engine in 1996 and 1997, but in 1998 the ML SUV came out and all w210 chassis cars got the SOHC V6, including the wagon. Still, the w140 S-Class cars kept the m104 DOHC engine until 1999, the last year of that chassis. Specualtion is that this engine was "better" and thus was kept in the big-dollar S-Class cars. Also, the G-wagen SUV (also big $$$) kept the m104.
So, no. Don't be scared by all this, though. A well maintained SOHC V6 is probably a perfectly fine motor for a long time. I have heard that RUST! was an issue on early 210 sedans, not sure about the wagons. I couldn't believe it at first. Good luck.

The M112 V6 is an extremly reliable and long lived motor. Cents per mile it is probably cheaper to run then a 606.

Also resale is in the pits for E320's so bargins are everywhere! I have seen 2000 and 01's for $18k+/-.
