Talking Heaven is the thrill of lighting a new engine off...

Here I am 45, with a kid going to college who argues with me about George Bush's "No child left behind policy" at the dinner table and a wife who is a good commercial artist, so supposedly I am mature grown adult.
I guess you could say that! I do my own taxes, manage to keep my shirt tucked in all day and dont even spill coffee on myself three times a day now. My wife makes sure I dont eat 4 packages of Reese's Cups and three Cokes for lunch and Pizza for dinner and I have even been seen in a Tie and Dress shoes! I even read the front page of the newspaper now and not the Classified Ads or Comics.

Yet today is a very special day! I am lighting off the engine I stuck back in my 85 300D and I am on a High this morning. Last night I made my final connections in the fuel and cooling system and today I turn the Switch. Even after rebuilding some 14 engines, working on adavanced Systems equipment at work, meeting Al Gore in person, today is still the coolest day of my Life..

Meanwhile in Manhattan today, Donald Trump will launch a new 123 billion dollar skyscaper project, Paris Hilton will unveil a new 67 million cosmetics line and World Leaders will meet at the UN to discuss disarming Iran, AND somewhere in a small town in South Jersey a 45 year old man will start a Diesel Engine found in my Indy's Garage that was sighting idle for an year and a half...
I was up all night dreaming of that first cacaphoney when she kicks over and then settles into rythmic clatter..its the sweetest sound in the world... Now thats excitement! Thats living!

You are not alone.....My wife and my mother both can not understand why I preffer my old Benzes to buying a brand new car....my Mother even offered me $10K to put towards a brand new car....with the stipulation it has to be a brand new car.

cut it out 'yer giving me goosebumps!!!

I'm new to MB's....I bought a $1000 project 300D.....2 minutes ago I totalled what I've put into the project in the short time I've had it. $842.26 (that includes a mityvac and pretty nice tap/die set)

I'm prolly within ~100 dollars worth of parts before I can run it and register it. I can't wait!!

After I get it driving it will prolly be another~$1.5K or so for good solid handling....

10 grand towards a new car? No thanks! I couldn't afford it.

Ahh, that first cylinder to fire is such a sweet sound. I haven't rebuilt any diesels (yet) but that first crackle out of the header pipe on a gasser drag car engine was always music. I don't think the neighbors always agreed, but then again we were usually just getting the engine back together at about 2 a.m on a Friday morning.

To Mr. Leathermang

The guy who sold it to me, who is pretty honest, said the car last ran in March of 2004, until it was hit. I drained 8 quarts of oil from it before I put it in so I may have made the wrong assumption of just sticking Oil into it before starting it.

Do you have such a procedure? I will delay if necessary. Thanks for your interest and messaging me.

At a minimum an incantation of some sort is in order. Something about Rudolph perhaps? I dunno.....Perhaps some peanuts on hand?

SCREECH......Is using the term "dunno" instead of "don't know" annoying? I often type conversationally and therefore informally. If it is annoying I will attempt to reduce my use of prollys dunnos and the like.....

As for starting a long still engine? perhaps some powerservice in the fuel filter? maybe turn the car over a few times without starting it?

I thought we were talking about a freshly rebuilt engine. Just putting in a used motor doesn't deserve such flowery prose.

Used, but new for us. Or maybe an old friend back for a while.

carrameow, I am envious!!

I know what you mean - I have a friend with a 2001 Volvo that is coming off lease - he is purchasing it. The car has been in the shop several times over the course of the lease for various piddly things - he wants to argue with me about why I should get rid of my (when new) $65,000 1990 420SEL and buy something new. I told him it was like compairing apples and lemons - my car has never left me stranded. He shut up at that point.
