The 4-cylinder 2.3 liter engine was available in the W123 chassis for non-US markets. The car was labelled as 230E / CE / TE.

123 variants
there are a few of the 230es around. i saw one here in lafayette. you might be able to locate one in a salvage yard or with body damage and or rusty or such. all the little things such as listed above will drive you nuts if you dont have two complete cars to start with.
better to find a good used 240 engine, make your car run, sell it and buy one like you are wanting. my $.02
