240D engine??? ANYONE

1 Attachment(s)
I am looking for a good 240d engine. I have an opertunity to buy a 83 240d, the engine runs, but, smoke/diesel pours out the exhaust. It's pretty much gone. To expensive to rebuild, I think. What do you think? He only wants $400 for the car. Paint is not perfect, but not peeling, probably just a buff. No rust though. It is a 4-speed too. What would I be getting into? Thanks!

If you can turn your own wrenches I would say go for it and plan on rebuilding the engine as long as their is no hole in the block/oil pan:eek:. Don't mess with it if you have to pay someone to do the work unless it is a car you really$ want.

I do work on my own stuff :D !! I was thinking about rebuilding. I have taken out my 300d engine and replaced mains and rods, but never took the whole thing apart. If I was to rebuild it, the cylinders would probably have to be replaced. I have never done this much to a diesel engine. Any idea what cost would be for parts??

I did one a few years ago and if I remember the parts came to around $800. I don't remember if that included the $150 I had to give for a good used head. I had a machine shop replace the cylinder liners. I think that was around $40/hole. Do a search on here and you will find my postings on it somewhere. I ended up selling the car to my sister for my neice to drive and she is to this day.

Went back and found the link.

I would be looking for a 300 turbo to bolt in. That would be a great car with a 300 and a 4 speed.

wowser - that was five years ago:eek:.

Well, if I do this myself, I was looking at worse case senario, baring needing new pistons, and valves. Here is the list, parts are comming from Germanstar.net Would this be most of it?

Cylinder sleeves=$38.00 X4
Rings/standard= $179.00
Std/Mains = $56.00
Std/Rods = $31.00
Timing chain = $109.00
Head gask kit = $53.00
Lower gask kit = $67.00

Total w/out shiping= $648.00

You may want to compare prices here at fastlane.......I know Ron over at Germanstar but he isn't the cheapest guy around.

I bought a very nice one with 76k on Ebay. $500. It went in my truck a few months ago and is perfect. I'd look around there and see what turns up.

I just got a complete car with 125k given to me a couple weeks ago that I'll pull apart and keep the motor for a spare. Sometimes you just step into it!

Are you sure you don't want to sell that engine to me??? :D I am thinking you are feeling sorry for me and that you would do everything you can do to help get this poor stalled 240d back on the road, and restore its pride!! :D Am I right???????????????

MercedesRover 05-11-2005 03:18 PM

Sorry, I think I'll keep this one. But I'll keep my eyes open for another for you!

the earlier 123's (240D and 300D) had the steel wheels with hub caps, up until81 i think. the later 123's have cast aluminum (?) wheels, like yours (i saw the pic of your '85 on your thread) you do have the original wheels.
