shims

I ordered shims from the local stealership - about $2 each. They are called washers or spacers, I think that's what he said.

Anyway, he said they come in 0.05 mm increments starting at 1.0 mm. That didn't sound right to me - I thought I saw a post about the shims being .2 mm starting size (or was it the FSM).

So for shims, before you mail order, it might be worth getting them straight from the dealer.

1.00 to 2.00 mm. is correct. The ones in the 1.60 mm. range are sorta, kinda, ~, approximately the most common. 0.05 mm change in thickness equals ~ 3 bar change in pressure.

Thicker shims equalling a raise in pop pressure, right? I got my tester set up and working today and I need a source of shims to start balancing them.

You can lower pop pressure by sanding/lapping the spring and zero in very precisely on a pop pressure. That method requires that one set all of the injectors slightly above the desired pressure and then drop them down to the exact pressure desired. I have adjusted injectors to within 10 psi on a set of four. I usually opt for 30 psi as closer than that takes a whole lot more time and I cannot notice a difference in performance. I also opt for the high spec on pop pressures and the advanced spec for timing as that combo assists economy and cold starts due to bettter atomization.

There is a pedantic and unhealthy obsession on this board with balancing injectors. Get them within the range specified in the factory shop manual and call them perfect.

The priorities in injector work are cleanliness, sealing and spray patterns. Read the book.

If you want to spend your time and money balancing injectors to the nth degree, you have nothing to lose but your time and money. Don't expect any real results. You do get bragging rights, anyone who knows what you are talking about will only be impressed that you wasted your time and money.

Read the book.

Does Autozone not carry a pop tester in their rental tools? Seems it would be easier to rent one.

The pop tester is a highly precise and delicate instrument. Not your ordinary run of the mill rental tool.

corn oil, hmmm gonna have to consider using that.
There are several things that one can learn with a pop test stand.....

If you bring the pressure up slowly, you can find dribblers....

But....if you are testing your spray pattern, you need to operate the pumping handle with a firm, sharp motion.....the camshaft within the FI Pump operates very quickly.......use a piece of paper to determine spray pattern...

However.....the type of Injector used in these 617 Engines makes a buzzing sound....that sound is very important in the setting of your injectors......also the spray pattern is different, it is designed to impinge upon the little ball in the pre-combustion chamber.....

I'll see if I can find some info in one of my old textbooks...and post them here.....

Here's a list of all the parts I ordered for mine from mcmaster.com. It includes the more expensive max pressure needle gauge. All you need to add to this list to have a pop tester is a grease gun, grease extenstion hose and an old injector line

Proper Pattern?

I need to work on some injectors and I have forgotten where I found a picture of the proper spray pattern. Could someone please post a pic of what a proper pattern for the 617 would look like? Thanks

So, no pics out there? I have searched and searched, but can't find anything beyond "no pee streams". So, is that the most important thing to look for, any little streamers (a uniform mist)?

I use a .10 mm endodontic file to clean the nozzle holes (carefully) .

My home made pop tester is not as elegant, but does have, what some have called, the "California Twist" to the injector line.

And my name is Bruce, also.
What type of weed is that growing in the backround of the poptester picture?
