Oh boy, you don't know the can of worms you just opened! But personally, I use Mobil1 15W-50.

The weight of the oil can be somewhat dictated by the region where the car is to operate, but it MUST be diesel rated oil. Look for the C_ rating on the container. Not sure what the most recent letter is to be substituted for the "_", but this ensures that the oil is rated for soot control.

Any 15W40 oil on the market will be diesel rated. For the other weights, you may have to do a lot of shopping to find one with diesel ratings.

Have a look at your service receipt, or start asking for a little oil change sticker at every oil change, with the weight and brand of oil marked on it. Or start changing your own oil!

Also, a far more interesting question, in my mind, is where did the original oil go? Are you leaking or smoking? How much oil disappeared and in what span of time?

If you love cupcake you will disregard the recommendation made by your mechanic. He is recommending oils for a gasoline engine.
Use only diesel rated 15W40 in whatever brand or flavor you find.

DELO-400 (15W40) is available at Costco.
