A tangled web of two 87 diesels

Hi Guys, tell me if this makes sense....
My dad has an 87 300TD with a bad head. The only heads I've found are new, the cheapest, $1750. I've located another 87 diesel, this one however is a SDL. On this car the head is O.K. but it has a bad cylinder(still runs). It comes with two drivetrains, the extra engine has a bad head but apparently the block is o.k. Now, here's where it gets a little complicated... I've also found someone who "may" have a complete engine for under $1000. What I'm considering doing is putting the complete engine for under a $1000 into the SDL and then taking the head off the current engine and putting that on the 300TD. I would then have one completely bad engine, two transmissions(I don't know the history on these yet) and hopefully two running diesels.
What do you think??
Matt

96E300D,

Sounds good to me if the $1000 engine is OK. Get a quarantee that it is OK or your money back. By OK I mean it: runs good, no excessive smoke, no coolant leaks, no knocks and it starts easily.

Thanks P.E.H., the seller said the engine has low mileage, low one hundred, but I'll find out more today.

seller listed a sick '87 300D on eBay, no reserve. You might get lucky and buy it for another parts car!

never mind the fact the seller says it has an 8 CYLINDER 7.3 LITER TURBO DIESEL. ALso shows pictures of a diesel truck on the page

Thanks for the heads up!
I looked at the SDL and man is that thing wacked. Paint's shot, dented rt ft fender, broken headlight, broken rear taillight, A/C's still out from last engine swap, front seat shot, cracked dash, sunroof doesn't work.... if the lower end is gone, I'm not too sure I'd put any value in the fact the head would be o.k. I think I'll see if the other engine is available and just drop that in the 300D.

if you have a rebuildable core of a 300 engine i would be interested if you decide to sell.

If you are giving up on the SDL what is the location and information on it I might be interested. Stress the word might.

Thanks

The info on the car can be found at recycler.com. As to the rebuildable core, I live in So. CA, I don't know if it would be cost effective for you to ship it out. It would also come with a known cracked head(does that qualify as rebuildable?).
