300D vs. 300E

I was wondering if an 87 300D cost more or less than a 87 300E when new?

The 300D has a turbo, the 300E does not! I wonder what other cost related items might make the two models differ in price?

How much faster is the E over the D? What other differences were there?

Is a D higher in resale today than the E?

well the 300E has a gasolene engine....and the 300D has a diesel engine....so outside of the turbo there is just one or two things different about them.

different

usually the diesel models are priced a little below comparable gas models. i suspect that this has nothing to do with cost of mfgr. but percieved market attituce. for that era i would suspect that the performance is very similar.

Diesel engines generally come with an extra price. I found a 1987 MB price guide that lists the MSRP for both the 300E and 300D as 41500 ... although I could have sworn the 300D was about $500 more expensive. I have a price guide at home for the same year, but mine (I think, at least) lists the cars at 39500. I get confused so I'll double-check.

Generally, though, diesels draw a price increase because they require more raw material to build, and, despite having fewer moving parts, require sturdier construction because of higher compression. They are also heavier to transport, and, at least in this country, are somewhat rare. While the demand is not high, neither is the supply. Few models offer the diesel option so I would guess that contributes to the higher prices. It's almost an "elite" thing ... not sure if this holds true in countries where diesel is the norm. The Jeep Liberty, the current E-Class MB, and the Jetta are more expensive in their diesel forms. The Liberty is 1,500 more expensive than it's gas equivalent, at least in the Limited Edition bracket.

BTW, the Kelly Blue Book indicates that the 1987 300D is about $1,000 more valuable than it's gas equivalent if the two have equal mileage. This makes sense ... diesels usually last longer and even if that doesn't always hold true, people certainly believe it will.
