HUGE White smoke cloud

my 82 300sd has just started smoking horribly bad today after i put the breather line back on onto it, the line that runs from the valve cover to the breather, is it possible that this could make it smoke like a freight train? I pulled into a gas station tonight and the attendant thought it was on fire! It has been very sluggish too, any help would be great thanks, Dan

smokey

white smoke... is it light blue? that would be fuel. is it darker blue? that would be oil. its not steam? that evaporates quickly. did you do anything else at the time you did the hose?

Antifreeze making it through the system has a VERY distinctive sickningly sweet smell to it...so sniff the exhaust cloud.....

it is NOT antifreeze, i pulled the hose from the top of the air cleaner when i got home and the car stalled, i don't know what's going on. It started after i put it back on. It's either oil blowby burning or unburned fuel, it will only go about 40 mph at full throttle.

Now that is odd that it stalled when you pulled it....How many miles was on this car? You didn't suck a cat or small dog into the air cleaner did you?

it's got 170,000 miles, it has been perfect for me since i have had it, no problems and just had the oil changed, hardly burns any oil before.

Check for air restrictions on the intake path...and look under the car to make sure you didn't pick any debris up crushing a pipe somehow...since it happened suddenly check for those first..

I wonder if an EGR sticking open could cause those symptoms....

all this

was caused by a kink in the breather pipe? i wouldnt have guessed it could be so dramatic.

A restriction in the breather if large enough will pressurise the Crank case and act on the fuel cutoff solenoid partially shutting fuel off to the engine reducing power.....

I had a different restriction along with some self induced air leaks in the troublshooting process last year in a threat called http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=105386&highlight=loss+power+briefly
